Abstract: The air-bag comprises a front panel, a rear panel and an inner panel interposed between the front and rear panels. Each panel has an outer peripheral edge, all of the panels being of fabric joined together along a non-rupturable outer seam at their outer peripheral edges to define an air-bag with the front and rear panels being the outer walls of the air-bag and with the inner panel inside the air-bag. A central opening in the rear panel provides a mouth of the air-bag for receiving inflation gas. A central opening in the inner panel is at least as large as the opening in the rear panel. The inner panel is additionally joined to the front panel along an inner seam around the central opening on the inner panel and joined to the rear panel by a non-rupturable middle seam located between the inner seam and outer seam on the inner panel. A flap comprises an area on the inner panel between the inner seam and middle seam. The flap has an inner edge comprising the inner seam. An outer edge comprises the middle seam. A gas exhaust on the rear panel is between the middle seam and the mouth of the air-bag.

Abstract: A compressed gas airbag inflator (50) includes a cylindrical sidewall (54) enclosing a storage chamber (52) having a first end closed by a weld ring (59) containing a rupture disc (60). A cap (70) supporting an initiator squib (72) covers the rupture disc (60) and directs gas leaving the storage chamber (52) into an exhaust manifold chamber (62) running the length of the storage chamber (52). The manifold chamber (62) is bounded by an exterior wall (68) connected to one side of the storage chamber (52) and has a series of exhaust ports (66) which increase in diameter as their distance from the cap (70) increases. The exterior wall of the manifold chamber (62) may be integral with the side wall (54) of the storage chamber (52). The flow of gas into an associated airbag can be directed in an advantageous manner and squib ignition products can be cooled prior to entering the airbag.

Abstract: A cover and housing assembly for a module of a vehicle safety restraint system including a cover (14) having a pair of doors (32, 34). Each of the doors has an upper edge and a lower edge, joined by a seam of frangible material. An extruded housing (12) includes a pair of sidewalls (18, 20), each of the sidewalls having a free edge (26) extending along a length thereof. A plurality of attachment segments (42) are formed integrally with and spaced along a length of each of the doors, with open sections (44) between respective pairs of attachment segments. A plurality of attachment portions (24) are formed integrally with and spaced along a length of each of the sidewalls (32, 34) with recessed sections (28) between respective pairs of attachment portions. Upon assembly of the cover and housing, the attachment segments of the doors interdigitate with the attachment portions of the housing. Grooves or bores (25, 45) in the attachment segments and portions are thus axially aligned to form a channel between each of the housing sidewalls and a respective cover door. An attachment rod (50) extends through each channel to form a direct hinged connection between the sidewalls of the housing and the doors of the cover deployment of the module, the doors separate along the frangible seam (40) and pivot outwardly opening the housing, without causing material stress to the cover at the hinged connection.
