Abstract: A low-odor aqueous binder dispersion containing as copolymerized units, and based on solids content, (a) from 25 to 57.5% by weight of butadiene or of butadiene and an acrylic acid ester, the content of copolymerized butadiene being not less than 15% by weight, (b) from 40 to 70% by weight of styrene, (c) from 1 to 5% by weight of maleic acid or maleic anhydride and (d) from 1.5 to 7% by weight of methacrylamide, for use in paper-coating compositions.

Abstract: The formation of free bromine is suppressed in aq. solns. at 20-100 degrees C, contg. bromide ions and HNO3, the suppression is achieved by adding urea in less than the stoichiometric amt. w.r.t. the HNO3. The aq. soln. is pref. also treated with O2, esp. gases contg. min. 50 vol % O2. Used e.g. in mfg. hexamethylene-diamine needed in the prodn. of polyamides.

Abstract: Aq. dispersions of polymers from ethylenic-unsatd monomers contain as dispersing agent system a mixt. of (a) alkali and/or NH4 salts of 12-20C mono-alkyl or monoalkenyl sulphates, and (b) >=1 ether contg. OH gps. from a polyhydric alcohol. Used as binders for paper coating, opt. mixed with natural binders, e.g. casein or starch. The system has excellent pigment-binding capacity, shear stability and resistance to viscosity change on storage. Low foaming tendency, and any foam formed is less stable than that from known systems in which (b) is an ester of a polyhydric alcohol and 12-18C fatty acid. The tendency of the latter to hydrolysis during storage is also overcome.
