Abstract: Catalytic hydrogenation of volatile side-products of 2-ethylhexan-1-ol oxidation yields heptan-3-ol. The side-products (typically heptan-1-ol formate, heptan-3-one, 2-ethylhexan-1-al and fatty acids, b.pt. 140-160 degrees C) may be first freed of acids by extraction with H2O or dil. alkali. The catalyst may be Co, Ni and/or Cu (activated by Mn or Cr) and may contain phosphoric acids. Hydrogenation may be effected continuously in the gas or liquid phase under press.
