    Abstract: Preparation of protected aldehydes and ketones of formulae (I) and (II) comprises addition of alcohols of formula (III) to acetylenes or allenes of formulae (IV) and (V) in the gas phase at elevated temperatures in the presence of a heterogeneous, X-ray amorphic zinc or cadmium silicates. The content of zinc or cadmium, calculated as the oxide, is 1-40 wt.%. The catalyst is prepared by bringing a zinc or cadmium salt and an organic acid (which decomposes at below 400 degrees C) into contact with amorphic silica. Formation of the catalyst takes place at 50-500 degrees C in the presence of an OH-containing compound selected from water, 1-10C alkanols, 2-6C diols or triols or 1-6C carboxylic acids. R1OH (III) (R)2C=C=C(R)2 (V) R1 = H or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic group or acyl (all optionally containing inert substituents); R = H or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic groups (which optionally join together to form rings); and m = 0 or 1.

    Abstract: Unsaturated ketones, comprising optionally substituted but-3-enyl and/or buta-2.3-dienyl methyl ketones, are prepared by: (a) reacting allyl alcohols and/or propargyl alcohols with isopropenyl ethers, with formation of ketals as by-product; (b) preparing isopropenyl ethers by catalytic gas phase reaction of ketals with propyne and/or allene; and (c) feeding the ketal from stage (a) into stage (b). The but-3-enyl methyl ketones of formula (Ia) and but-2,3-dienyl methyl ketones of formula (Ib) formed, allyl alcohols of formula (IIa) and/or propargyl alcohols of formula (IIb) and isopropenyl ethers (III) used as starting materials are ketals (IV). R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 = H or (cyclo)alkyl, (cyclo)alkenyl or ar(alk)yl (optionally containing O); or R1R2 = 5-6-membered ring; and R6 = 1-4C alkyl. (III) are prepared by the gas phase reaction of (IV) and propyne or allene at elevated temperature in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst containing Zn or Cd plus Si and O.

It is alternatively reacted under hydrothermal conditions at the suspension boiling point up to 250 degrees C. Aqueous pH value is held at 4-9.5 throughout. The Zn/Si atom ratio is kept within 1.6-2.5. Preferred Features: From the product, a suitable zinc silicate, is formed. This has the hemimorphite structure as claimed, the composition Zn4Si2O7(OH)2-2yOy.xH2O, where x and y are between 0 and 1. To this end the product is roasted at temperatures of 70-600 degrees C. pH is maintained in the region 5.5-8 or 6-7.5. When reactin other salts, 0-20 mol% of the following group A, referred to zinc, is used with 0-20 mol% of the following group B, referred to silicon, (i.e. the elements in the hemimorphite structure described).
