Abstract: Copolymers of formula (I), based on dicarboxylic acid imides, alkenyl isocyanates and/or alkenyl urethanes are claimed, as are also (i) prepn. of (I) by free radical polymerisation of 30-70 mol.% monomer of formula (III) corresp. to the `b' units and 70-30 mol.% cyclic monomer of formula (IV) corresp to the `c' units, opt. with up to 50 mol.% comonomer, the copolymer thus obtd. then being reacted with H-X-Y-Z; and (ii) use of (I) in non-linear optics. In formulae (I), (III) and (IV), R -R = H or 1-20C alkyl (opt. substd. and/or opt. contg. a heteroatom); R = H, 1-10C alkyl (opt. substd. by Ph or OH), phenyl or benzyl (each opt. substd. by one to four 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy gps), 3-8C cycloalkyl, phenylethyl, diphenylmethyl, naphthyl, carbazoyl, isobornyl, adamantyl or 9-fluorenyl; X = O or NH; Y = 1-20C alkylene, (-CH2O)n-, -(CH2CH2O)n- or -(CH2CH(Me)O)n-, with n = 1-15; Z = H or an opt. substd. residue D with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties; M = comonomer; a and c = 0.3-0.7; and b and d = 0-0.3, with a+b+c+d = 1.
