Abstract: A process for the drying and fixing by dry heat of basic dyes which have been padded onto fibrous material consisting of or containing acylonitrile polymers, wherein the thermal treatment is carried out in the presence of (a) a reaction product having a mean molecular weight of at least 200 obtained from an alkylene oxide and a compound which contains at least one hydrogen atom attached to nitrogen or oxygen and/or at least one carboxylic ester group and (b) either a compound having the general formula wherein R is a C6-C20 alkyl radical; R1 is H, methyl or ethyl; R2 is H, methyl or ethyl; X is 1 to 15, 2 is 0 or 1; A (when Z=0) is SO3H, or (when Z=1) is SO3H, PO4H2 or -(CH2)nSO3H and n is 1 to 3; or a water-soluble salt of said compound. The components (a) and (b) are each used in amounts of 50% to 500% with reference to the weight of the basic dye and the ratio (a): (b) is preferably 1:20 to 20:1. Component (b) preferably has a mean M.W. of 500 to 5000. Basic dyes used may be xanthenes, acridines, oxazines, diphenylmethanes, tri-phenylmethanes, anthraquinones, methines or azo type dyes. Compounds of type (a) above include adducts of ethylene oxide with castor oil, colophony, stearyl alcohol, oleylamine, oleyl monoethanolamide, propylene oxide and water, nonylphenol, sperm oil alcohol and ethylene glycol. Components (b) include alkyl benzene sulphonic acids; acid sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid esters of alkyl phenylglycols or polyglycols, alkylphenyl glycol or polyglycol sulphoalkyl ethers or their water-soluble alkali metal amine, ammonium or alkaline earth metal salts. Components (a) and (b) may be applied in aqueous solution by dipping or spraying before or after the dye has been applied. The thermal treatment is carried out first at 100 DEG to 150 DEG C and then at 190 DEG to 210 DEG C for 20 to 180 seconds. The padding liquors may contain disperse dyes in addition to basic dyes and components (a) and (b).

Abstract: Compounds R1OCOO(CH2)4OCOOR2, wherein R1 and R2 are saturated chlorine-containing aliphatic radicles with 6 to 18 carbon atoms in all, are plasticizers for synthetic resins. Resins mentioned are vinyl polymerizates, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, polyvinyl esters of organic acids, polyacrylic compounds or interpolymerizates of such vinyl compounds, aldehyde and ketone resins, cellulose esters, e.g. nitrocellulose and cellulose esters of organic acids, and phenol- or maleic acid-modified colophony esters. Conventional plasticizers, fillers, stabilizers and dyestuffs may be present. The incorporation of the ester with the resin may be effected in the usual way, e.g. by kneading or rolling or the ester may be added to an aqueous emulsion of the resin. Generally 10-60 per cent of ester is present. The compositions may be used in lacquers and worked in the usual way to yield lamin , films, foils or bands, for sticking surfaces together, for coating wood, metal, fabrics or paper and for the preparation of cable compositions, oilcloths, artificial leather and floor coverings. In examples: (1) P.V.C. is plasticized with the bis-omega-chlorbutyl carbonate of butanediol-1,4 and in the remainder lacquers are made comprising together with conventional volatile solvents and the bis-omega-dichlorbutylcarbonate of butanediol-1.4 (2) pyroxylin; (3) a synthetic resin derived from cyclohexanone and methylcyclohexanone by caustic soda treatment, carbon black and pyroxylin; (4) crude castor oil and pyroxylin; (5) a U.-F. condensation product and pyroxylin; and (6) polystyrenes.ALSO:Compounds R1OCOO-(CH2)4OCOOR2 wherein R1 and R2 are saturated chlorine containing aliphatic radicles with 6 to 18 carbon atoms in all are obtainable by reaction of the bischlorcarbonic acid ester of butanediol-1,4 with monohydric saturated chlor-alcohols such as omega-chlorbutanol and its homologues or ethylene glycol mono-omega-chlorethyl ether, or by reacting chlor-carbonic acid esters of these chlor-alcohols with butanediol-1,4. They are plasticizers (c.f. Group IV (a). In an example (1) the bis-omega-chlor-butyl-carbonate of butanediol-1,4 is made by reacting butanediol-1,4 with chlor-butyl-chlor-carbonate.ALSO:Natural resins e.g. colophony and dammar, are plasticized with a compound R1OOCO(CH2)4 OCOOR2, where R1 and R2 are saturated chlorine-containing aliphatic radicles with 6 to 18 carbon atoms in all.
