Abstract: The cpd. of formula Na2S2O5.HCOONa (I) is new. It is made by concn. of an aq. soln. contg. Na pyrosulphate and Na formate (mole ratio 1:1-1:4) at 60-110 degrees C, then cooling to 10-30 degrees C and sepg. crystals formed. Treatment of an aq. slurry of (I) with acid gives Na dithionite in high yields. Compared with the formate method for dithionite prodn. this method does not require pure SO2 and (I) is relatively stable (to moisture and air) and not spontaneously flammable.

Abstract: Prodn. of Na dithionite (I) comprises adding to a suspension of Na2S2O5.HCOONa (II) in a mixt. of water and alcohol (is not >50 wt.% water) a source of protons to give pH is not 4.1. Pref. the medium contains methanol and 10-20 wt.% water, and the acid in H2SO3 generated by passing SO2 through the suspension. Esp. 1-6 wt. pts. solvent are used per pt. (II). By keeping pH >=4.1 side reactions, esp. those leading to thiosulphate, are suppressed and yields of (I) improved.
