Abstract: In the wet galvanising of wet articles essentially consisting of iron and whose surface is still contaminated with hydrochloric acid and possibly iron chloride from the pretreatment, the zinc melt is covered with a top flux of molten zinc chloride and alkali metal chloride. The covering is regenerated by adding fluxes which contain ammonium chloride, potassium chloride and, if required, zinc chloride. By adding the regenerating flux, a weight ratio of zinc chloride to alkali metal chloride of 1.5 : 1 to 4 : 1 and a content of oxidic zinc compounds of 10 to 40% by weight, calculated as zinc oxide, are maintained in the top flux.

Abstract: A dithionite, partic. Na dithionite, is stabilised by addn. of a combination of (a) a metallic soap of oleic acid and/or its sarcoside and/or an invert soap; (b) a 4-6C dicarboxylic acid and/or a fatty alcohol ether-sulphate of formula R'-O-CH2-CH2-O-CH2-CH2-O-SO3H (where R1 is a 12-14C hydrocarbyl). The dithionite is used e.g. in vat dyeing and in the paper industry. The stabilised dithionite is very stable w.r.t. humidity and air, is practically free from dust, and has excellent flow characteristics. It dissolves completely in water.

Abstract: Prodn. of Na dithionite (I) comprises adding to a suspension of Na2S2O5.HCOONa (II) in a mixt. of water and alcohol (is not >50 wt.% water) a source of protons to give pH is not 4.1. Pref. the medium contains methanol and 10-20 wt.% water, and the acid in H2SO3 generated by passing SO2 through the suspension. Esp. 1-6 wt. pts. solvent are used per pt. (II). By keeping pH >=4.1 side reactions, esp. those leading to thiosulphate, are suppressed and yields of (I) improved.

Before filtration, the stream of gas is subjected to a permanent change of direction in a tubular zone. Abstract: Anhydrous Na dithionite is prepd. by reacting SO2 with Na formate in a solvent comprising a mixt. of an aq. alcohol and a pyrrolidone of formula (I) (where R is 1-6C alkyl or aryl), with the proviso that after all the reactants have been added, the alcohol + (I) make up 65-90 (pref. 70-85) wt. % of the total solvent and the concn. of (I) in the alcohol + (I) mixt. is 10-60 (pref. 25-40) wt. %. Anhydrous Na2S2O4 is useful as a reducing agent. The process gives high yields based on SO2 (e.g. 83-91%) high space-time yields (e.g. 0.028-0.062 kg/l. hr) and a high-purity product (e.g. with a purity of ca. 90%).

Abstract: Flange connections having multi-layer apparatus or pipeline parts one below the other, in which corrosive and hot gases are manipulated, consist of an inner lining, which is composed of glass or quartz that is resistant to temperature changes and is surrounded by an external metal jacket, the intermediate space between the outer jacket and the lining being filled with a thermally insulating material. Arranged between the lining and the outer jacket, in the region of the ends of the lining, there are fire-resistant blocks, which surround the lining, are supporting, and do not touch over the complete area, the lining with the fire-resistant blocks terminating at at least one end in a manner which is not flush. The fire-resistant blocks surrounding the lining close at least largely in a flush manner with the outer jacket surrounding them, whose two ends merge into a flange connection.
