Abstract: A salt-like dyestuff comprises a cation of a basic dyestuff of p the di- or tri-arylmethane series combined with an anion of a phthalocyanine sulphonic acid. The dyestuffs may be prepared by reacting (1) the basic dyestuffs Auramine, Malachite green, Crystal violet, Methyl violet, Victoria pure blue or Rhodamine B or their carbinol bases with (2) a phthalocyanine sulphonic acid such as a mono-, di-, tri or tetrasulphonic acid of a metal-free or metal-containing phthalocyanine or a reaction product of such a sulphonic acid with an amount of alcohol insufficient for complete esterification or a salt of one of said phthalocyanine compounds. In the preparation of the dyestuff an acid binding material such as sodium carbonate or a tertiary amine may be present in the reaction mixture. In an example, Crystal violet dissolved in chloroform is added to a solution of phthalocyanine trisulphonic acid (sodium salt) in water and the mixture refluxed.

Abstract: Anhydrous hectographic dye formulations are prepared from a basic dye which still contains water by solution of the dye in a chlorinated hydrocarbon and removal of the water and chlorinated hydrocarbon by distillation, an ester wax being added to the chlorinated hydrocarbon or dye solution at any time prior to the distillation of the chlorohydrocarbon. The wax may be montan, ouricoury or particularly carnauba wax in a weight ratio wax: dye of 1:3 to 1:8; the chlorohydrocarbon may be carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene or particularly chloroform, and the dye crystal violet, chrysoidine, malachite green, fuchsine or Victoria blue dye. In the example the anhydrous product consists of 500 parts of dye and 100 parts carnauba wax.

Abstract: Concentrated solutions of basic dyes comprise a salt of a basic dye with a water-soluble carboxylic acid and an anhydrous or water-containing solvent miscible in all proportions with water and selected from polyhydric alcohols and esters and ethers thereof, polyethers, amides, lactones, nitriles, dimethyl sulphoxide, tetrahydrofuran and dioxan. The dye solutions may be used to make non-drying inks by dilution with, e.g. ethylene glycol, for use in self-recording instruments, stamp-pads and typewriter ribbons. The dye solutions may contain excess, e.g. 1.5 to 2 times the stoichiometric equivalent, of water-soluble acid and may also contain water up to 50% by weight of the solvent. The solutions may contain 20-80% by weight of basic dye, the preferred dyes being from the diarylmethane, triarylmethane and diazapolymethine series. Specified acids are fromic, acetic, propionic, maleic and lactic acids. Numerous solvents are specified the preferred ones being ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, formamide and dimethylformamide. The preferred method of preparing the dye solutions comprises dissolving the carbinol base of the basic dye, which may still be water-wet, in a mixture of water-soluble acid and said solvent. Specifications 808,308 and 865,965 are referred to.ALSO:Concentrated solutions of basic dyes comprise a salt of a basic dye with a water-soluble carboxylic acid and an anhydrous or water-containing solvent miscible in all proportions with water and selected from polyhydric alcohols and esters and ethers thereof, polyethers, amides, lactones, nitriles, dimethyl sulphoxide, tetrahydrofuran and dioxan.
