Abstract: Continuous anionic (co)polymerisation of styrene or diene monomers with alkali metal alkyl (I) as initiator is carried out in the presence of an alkyl or aryl of an at least divalent metal as retarder (II). Also claimed are (a) an initiator containing (I) and (II); (b) a solution of the initiator in a (cyclo)aliphatic hydrocarbon; and (c) styrene polymers obtained by this process.
