Abstract: The present invention relates to polymerized hydrogel adhesives, in particular those wherein the hydrogel is formed from monomers which include acrylamido-2-methane propanesulfonic acid or salts thereof (AMPS monomers) and those which contain glycerol as a humectant. In such adhesives, the levels of unpolymerized residual monomers, such as unpolymerized AMPS, acrylonitrile, acrylamide and t-butyl acrylamide; and the levels of other impurities such as acrolein, are kept very low. The present invention also relates to a process for making hydogel adhesives with very low levels of such unwanted materials. Such a process involves preparation of reaction mixtures under selected pH and/or temperature conditions and polymerization of AMPS monomers using selected conditions of pH and UV curing.

Abstract: The present invention relates to hydrogel adhesives which are capable of attaching to mammalian skin, exhibit excellent attachment and painless removal properties, and which show excellent stability upon storage at room temperature or even at elevated temperatures and for longer periods of time. The adhesive hydrogel described in the present invention can be used as body adhesive in products for e.g. personal care, medical devices, beauty care and a variety of functional articles to be worn by a human. The hydrogel adhesive of the invention comprises 10-60 wt. % of a cross-linked hydrophilic polymer, 5-80 wt. % of a water-soluble non-ionic humectant, and from about 10-85 wt. % water, wherein the hydrophilic polymer comprises at least 80 mole % of one or more weak-acid monomer units having a pKa above 3, the weak-acid monomer being more than 60 mole % in its salt form, the level of monomer in acid form in said hydrophilic polymer not exceeding 50 mole % of all monomer units and the hydrogel adhesive having a peel strength on PET of 0.3 to 5.0 N/cm and a stability index measured after 14 days SIx 14 below 0.50, preferably below 0.20, most preferably below 0.10.

Abstract: The present invention relates to polymerized hydrogels and processes to make such hydrogels, in particular hydrogel adhesives which are capable of attaching to mammalian skin and can be used in various personal care products, such as waste-management articles, and a variety of functional articles to be worn by a human. The hydrogels described herein are characterized by very low amount of residual starting monomers, impurities, and/or by-products that could be formed during polymerization. Specifically, the hydrogels are made by adding scavengers and/or chain transfer agent prior to polymerization. It has been found, that upon addition of same scavengers the material properties of the polymerized hydrogel differ from the properties of gels polymerized without the scavenger. This is due to the fact, that these specific scavengers act also as chain transfer agents in the radical polymerization. Further studies showed that also chain transfer agents, that are no scanvengers for residual monomer(s), impurities or byproducts influence the material properties of the polymerized hydrogel adhesive.

Abstract: The present invention relates to hydrogel adhesives for attachment to mammalian skin which exhibit particularly good compatibility with skin, in addition to excellent attachment and painless removal properties including in excess moisture conditions. Such adhesives comprise 10-60 wt% of a cross- linked hydrophilic polymer, 5-80 wt% of a water-soluble nonionic humectant, and 10-85 wt% water. The hydrophilic polymer comprises 1-50 mole% of one or more strong-acid monomers having a pKa below 3 and 50-99 mole% of one or more weak-acid monomers, having a pKa above 3, the strong-acid monomer being essentially in its salt form, and the weak-acid monomer being at least 50 mole% in its acid form, and at least 5 mole% in its salt form. The pH of the hydrogel adhesive is from 3 to 6, preferably from 3 to 5.5, most preferably 3.5 to 5. The present invention also encompasses personal care products containing said adhesives, such as disposable waste management articles, disposable absorbent articles, and various functional articles for attachment to the human body.
