Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a light-fast UV filter having a high absorbance due to the absorption in a UV-A region, scarcely manifesting an intrinsic color, i.e., having a sharp band structure and soluble in an oil or water by including a specific substituted α-methylstyrene derivative therein. SOLUTION: This substituted α-methylstyrene derivative represented by formula I [R is a 1-10C alkoxy or the like; R is H, a 2-10C alkyl or the like; R and R are each COOR or the like; R and R are each H, a (substituted) 1-12C alkyl or the like] (e.g. a compound represented by formula II) is used alone as a light-fast UV filter in a preparation for cosmetics and a pharmaceutical preparation or together with a well-known UV absorbing compound for the preparation for the cosmetics and the pharmaceutical preparation in order to protect human skin or human hair from sunlight. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by carrying out the condensation reaction of a compound represented by formula III with a compound represented by formula IV.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sunscreen for a cosmetic preparation or a medicine exhibiting an absorbance in UV-A region in high absorbance, light stable, having a clear inherent color, i.e., a sharp absorption band and soluble in oil or water depending on its substituting group. SOLUTION: This cosmetic or medical preparation comprises A) a compound substantially exhibiting absorbance in UV-A region, and B) a compound exhibiting absorbance in UV-A region, UV-B region and a region more than both as the UV filter. The compound A) is a derivative of 4,4'-diaryl butadiene of general formula (1), and a triazine derivative, a triazole derivative, a benzimidazole derivative, a benzotriazole derivative, a tetrahydroxybenzophenone derivative or the like are exhibited as the B) compound. [R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-20C alkyl group, a 3-10C cycloalkyl group or a 3-10C cycloalkenyl group].

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To absorb ultraviolet rays in a UV-A (when necessary, UV-B) region at a high absorptivity and raise the photostability by using a vinyl-substituted tetrahydronaphthalene or a vinyl-substituted benzotetrahydropyran having an electron attractive substituent group at the vinyl group in a cosmetic and a phermaceutical preparation. SOLUTION: This compound represented by formula I [X is a bivalent group of O, carbonyl or the like; Y is carbonyl or CR9R10; R1 and R2 are each an electron attractive group selected from among cyano, an alkylcarbonyl or the like; R3 is H, cyano or the like; R4 is H, hydroxyl or the like; R5 to R10 are each H or a 1-20C alkyl] is used as a photostable ultraviolet filter together with a known compound capable of absorbing ultraviolet rays in order to protect human skin and human hair against sunlight. In the compound represented by formula I, a compound represented by formula II (R3 is a low-molecular weight alkyl; R4 is H, a low-molecular weight alkyl or the like; X is a bivalent group of O or CRR group; R is H or a low-molecular weight alkyl) is a new compound.

SOLUTION: This substituted dibenzoylmethane compound of formula VII is obtained by condensing a benzaldehyde of formula I (R1 is a 3-12C alkyl) with an acetophenone of formula II (R2 is H, a 3-12C alkyl or a 1-12C alkoxy) to form a chalcone of formula III (exocyclic double bond exists as an E- or Z-configuration or their mixture) or condensing a benzaldehyde of formula IV with an acetophenone of formula V to form a chalcone of formula VI, then adding a halogen or a hypohalite to the chalcone of formula III or formula VI, desorbing HY group, hydrolyzing, as necessary, or epoxidizing the chalcone of formula III or formula VI to form an oxirane, thus opening its ring.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light protective agent having high absorbance in UV-A region, stable to light, exhibiting slight intrinsic color, i.e., a sharp band structure, getting soluble to water or oil through substituent manipulation, and intended for cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations. SOLUTION: The subject light protective agent combination comprises (A) compound(s) with absorbance mainly in UV-A region and (B) compound(s) with absorbance both in UV-A and UV-B regions; wherein the component A essentially comprises A(a) an effective amount of a hydroxybenzophenone of the general formula I and, optionally in addition, A(b) an effective amount of a 4,4-diarylbutadiene of the general formula II, and the component B comprises an effective amount of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds B(a), B(b), B(c), B(d), B(e), B(f), B(g) and B(h) of respective formulas III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and Xa and/or Xb. The light protective agent combination can be used as a light-stable filter in cosmetic preparations and pharmaceutical preparations for protecting human skin or human hair from sunlight.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect human epidermis or human hair from sunrays by using a diarylbutadiene as a water-soluble and photostable UV filter in a cosmetic and a pharmaceutical preparation. SOLUTION: A 4,4-diarylbutadiene represented by formula I R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl or the like; R3 is H, CN or the like; R4 is COOR6 [R6 is a 1-6C alkylene-SO3Y (Y is H, K+ or the like) or the like]; (n) is 1-3} is used as a water-soluble and photostable UV filter in a cosmetic and a pharmaceutical preparation for protecting human epidermis or human hair from sunrays, especially UV rays within the range of 320-400 nm. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by carrying out a condensation reaction of a compound represented by formula II with a compound represented by formula III in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. pyridine preferably at 20-150 deg.C. The compound represented by formula I is preferably contained in an amount of 0.1-10 wt.% based on the cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparation.

SOLUTION: A compound expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are each an electrophilic group such as cyano, an alkyl or the like; R3 is H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like; X is a divalent group or the like such as O or S; Z is a group or the like expressed by formula II (R4 is H, an alkyl or the like which may bonds to a benzylidene ring I or the like)], (e.g. a compound expressed by formula III) is used singly or together with a UV-absorbing compound for other known preparations for cosmetics and medicines as a photo-stable UV-filter in preparations for cosmetics and medicines for protecting the human skin and hair from the sun light. The compound expressed by formula I is included preferably in 0.1-10 wt.% based on the whole amount of the preparations for cosmetics and medicines. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. a compound expressed by formula IV with a compound expressed by formula V.
