    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photoprotective agent for cosmetics and medicines, absorbing in a high absorbance in the UV-A-region, having a pointed band structure and soluble in an oil or water depending on substituents. SOLUTION: A compound expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are each an electrophilic group such as cyano, an alkyl or the like; R3 is H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like; X is a divalent group or the like such as O or S; Z is a group or the like expressed by formula II (R4 is H, an alkyl or the like which may bonds to a benzylidene ring I or the like)], (e.g. a compound expressed by formula III) is used singly or together with a UV-absorbing compound for other known preparations for cosmetics and medicines as a photo-stable UV-filter in preparations for cosmetics and medicines for protecting the human skin and hair from the sun light. The compound expressed by formula I is included preferably in 0.1-10 wt.% based on the whole amount of the preparations for cosmetics and medicines. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. a compound expressed by formula IV with a compound expressed by formula V.

SOLUTION: The oligomeric 4,4-diarylbutadiene carboxylic ester of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, an aliphatic group or the like; R3 is an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group or the like; Y is O or a group of formula II (R4 is H, an aliphatic group or the like); (m) is 2-10; (n) is 1-3; X is a (m)-valent polyol group having 2-10 hydroxyl group] is obtained by Knoevenagel condensation of (m) mol aldehyde of formula III with an oligomeric (substituted) acetate of formula IV in an organic polar solvent (e.g. dimethylformamide) preferably at 40-150 deg.C using a catalyst (e.g. ammonium acetate).
