    Abstract: The invention relates to a thermoplastic moulding composition comprising a copolymer A and a graft copolymer B. The copolymer A makes up from 50 to 95% by weight of the moulding composition and is built up from a monovinylaromatic monomer and an unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride as further monomer. The graft copolymer makes up from 5 to 50% by weight of the moulding composition and comprises from 20 to 80% by weight of an elastomeric graft base and from 20 to 80% by weight of a graft shell. The graft shell contains from 80 to 99% by weight of a monovinylaromatic monomer and from 1 to 20% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing at least one reactive terminal group from the series consisting of -OH, -SH and -NHR, where R is H, alkyl having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, aralkyl or aryl. The moulding composition may contain conventional additives and is obtained from a melt of component A with the graft copolymer B by reaction at temperatures of >/=200 DEG C. It is used to produce mouldings.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a discontinuous (batch) process for the preparation of latices of polymers based on esters of acrylic acid with saturated aliphatic alcohols having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, by polymerisation of the monomers in emulsion under conventional pressure and temperature conditions, where first a mixture of water, emulsifier and an aliphatic alcohol (having 10-30 carbon atoms) is heated with stirring to temperatures above the melting point of the aliphatic alcohol, and the mixture is subsequently, if necessary, adjusted to the polymerisation temperature, and the polymerisation is carried out directly after the preparation of the mixture (preemulsion) by a) introducing all the initiator or b) introducing all the monomer, optionally with some of the initiator, or c) introducing some of the monomer and at least some of the initiator into the preemulsified mixture of water, emulsifier and alcohol, and metering in (feeding) the respective total or remaining amounts of monomer or initiator during the polymerisation.

    Abstract: A process, carried out without a diluent or in solution, in more than 2 reaction zones, for the continuous preparation of rubber-modified polymers of vinylaromatics, wherein a monomeric aromatic vinyl compound and an elastomeric polymer, in an amount of from 3 to 16% by weight based on the monomer, are polymerized, in the absence of a free radical initiator, but in the presence of a mercaptan as a chain transfer agent, at from 80 DEG to 180 DEG C. in a first reaction zone, with stirring, up to a maximum monomer conversion, Umax, given by the equation Umax=K-1 where K is the amount of rubber in % by weight based on monomer, and, in a second reaction zone, polymerization is continued, with stirring, to a conversion of up to about 50% by weight, after which a chain transfer agent is introduced in an amount of from 0.01 to 0.2% by weight, based on vinyl-aromatic monomer, and polymerization is continued, if appropriate in more than one reaction zone, up to a monomer conversion of less than 85% by weight. The polymer is treated in a devolatilization zone to remove vinyl-aromatic monomer and solvent, if any, and these constituents are recycled to the process. The process produces products which exhibit good gloss coupled with good mechanical properties, and which can be employed for conventional applications.

    Abstract: The polymers are prepd. by polymerising the monomers, opt. completely, in the presence of a specially modified (a) organopolysiloxane or (b) silicone-rubber. (a) or (b) contains for each basic unit. 0.0001-0.6 (0.01-0.02) gps. which can be attacked by free radicals, which are capable of H- or halogen-transfer or represent acrylic or methacrylic gps. The modified polymes can be extruded, deep-drawn or injection-moulded to articles such as profiles, sheets, pipes, casings, container or shells. They can also be used as impact-resistant modifiers for other hard thermoplastics, esp. when contg. a large silicone rubber proportion. Modified polymers have high cold impact tenacity and weatherability and can be processed to products having good surface properties. Impact-resistant polymers of Me methacrylate are highly transparent and resist chemicals. In an example 1800 g 4% soln. of silicone rubber contg. 0.001 acrylic gps./unit was prepd. soln. was polymerised to 25% styrene conversion followed by addn. of Na4P2O7 soln. and polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and styrene conversion to 99.5-99.8%. Compression-moulded polymer pearls had notch impact tenacity 10.1 KJ/m2, elongation at break 15%, tear strength 35.2 N/mm2 and yield stress 38.4 N/mm2.

    Abstract: Elimination is effected from a molten mass, soln. or dispersion by introducing the preheated material into the base part of a horizontal extruder under a pressure corresp., at the preheating temp., at least to the satn. pressure of the volatiles. The material is heated as it advanced through the extruder so that evapn. of the volatiles begins as the material enters the extruder, the major part of the volatiles leaving the extruder through an orifice situated vertically above the inlet orifice. The treated material is then extruded. Very rapid and efficient elimination of volatiles is obtd. The process is capable of treating the plastic materials at high flow rates. Material having a very low volatiles content, e.g. 0.1 wt. %, can be obtd.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic moulding composition which is a mixture of 5-95% by weight of an impact-modified styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (I) and 95-5% by weight of a polycarbonate (II). The impact-modified styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (I) is a mixture of two constituents A and B. It contains from 50 to 95% by weight of a copolymer A, based on A + B, which is built up from: a1) from 65 to 95 parts by weight of a monovinylaromatic monomer, a2) from 5 to 35 parts by weight of an unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride, optionally a3) from 2 to 15 parts by weight of an acrylically unsaturated monomer. Constituent B is present in a proportion of 5 to 50% by weight, based on A + B, and is a graft copolymer built up from: b1) from 50 to 90 parts by weight of a rubber which has a glass transition temperature, Tg, of below 0 DEG C, b2) from 10 to 50 parts by weight of a monovinylaromatic monomer, and b3) from 0.1 to 25 parts by weight of a (meth)acrylate and/or acrylonitrile, where, regarding the parts by weight of the monomers building up the hard matrix and the graft shell, the absolute values of the difference of the parts by weight between the sum of [a2) and a3)] and [b3)] differ by 4 or less than 4. The moulding composition according to the invention is prepared by mixing the constituents component I with component II in the melt. The moulding compositions according to the invention are used for the production of mouldings.
