Abstract: In order to prepare thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (a) organic diisocyanate, (b) polyhydroxyl compounds with molecular weights of 500 to 8,000, and (c) chain extenders with molecular weights of 60 to 400 in the presence of (d) catalysts, and optionally (e) auxiliaries, and/or (f) additives are reacted in two reaction stages at temperatures from 60 DEG C. to 250 DEG C. In the first reaction stage the components are continuously mixed, the reaction mixture is applied to a carrier, preferably a conveyor band of thermoplastic material, and is allowed to react at the reaction temperature until solidified. Subsequently, the solidified reaction mixture is melted in an extruder and the reaction is completed in the second reaction stage.

Abstract: Amino plastics and phenolic plastics are produced by making a precondensate solution in an extruder and then compounding with additives and degassing in a partly- filled second extruder. A process for the production of amino plastics and phenolic plastics comprises (a) making a precondensate solution in an extruder and then (b) transferring the solution (16) continuously to another extruder (20) in which the inlet zone (E) and degassing zone (G) are kept partly filled, and in which it is compounded with additives, degassed, and extruded to a semi-finished or final product.

Abstract: Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers are produced continuously by reacting organic polyhydroxy cpds., diisocyanates and low m. wt. chain lengthening agents in a multi screw extruder, the temp. of the reaction mixt. between the time of its formation and its leaving the extruder reducing from 180-250 degrees C to 165-200 degrees C. The reaction mixt. is always in the molten state, thus obviating any deposition of solid mixt. in the extruder. The mixt. has higher viscosity, thus facilitating the prodn. of a more easily mouldable extrudate. The resulting polyurethane elastomers are completely sol. and free from specks. The process is suitable for the "One Shot" or prepolymer type procedure.

Abstract: Granulator for thermoplastics has a die plate, a cutter mount upstream of the die plate carrying cutters, and a drive shaft on which the rotary cutter mount is axially displaceably mounted. The cutter mount is fastened on a multi-component casing defining a press. chamber, and can be moved against the die plate by the press. exerted by liq. or gaseous media in the press. chamber. The component of the casing moving together with the ctter mount is guided, upon the driven shaft, by ball-and-socket joints and a ball box. Accurate and reproducible setting of the press. exerted by the cutter mount against the die plate is rapidly and easily effected, even by relatively unskilled operators.

Abstract: Continuous prepn. of indoxyl-Na, (I), comprises mixing a melt of an alkali metal salt of phenyl glycine with an Na amide/alkali hydroxide melt at 230-250 degrees C in a multiple worm extruder, whereby the melt in mixing- and reaction zone warms up to 260-340 degrees C. After reaction, the melt is discharged. Dwelling times in extruder, after mixing to reaction temp. is 0.5-3 min. The NH3 relased is drawn off in degassing zones. Use of multiple worm extruder allows good mixing of highly viscous melts. Surface of thin layers formed is constantly renewed. Heat released in exothermic reaction is drawn off quickly. No deposits are left in extruder. Process requires a smaller quantity of alkali hydroxide. Yield of (I), indigo quality and indigo yield are not affected.

Abstract: A mixing head for multicomponent plastics, especially polyurethane, in whose mixing chamber (2) a hollow piston (7) can be moved to and fro to control the component streams. The hollow piston contains an expulsion piston (8), which is movable independently of the hollow piston, and which can be passed through an outlet tube (3) which adjoins the outlet orifice (4). The end face (12) of the hollow piston forms, together with the mixing chamber wall (11) nearest the sprue, a shearing gap in which the components are mixed. As a result of the design and arrangement of the pistons (7) and (8), good mixing is achievable even under critical conditions, and the mixing chamber is also easily cleaned.

Abstract: Thick liquids are blended and homogenised by continuous passage through varying shear field. Here they are subjected to a shear frequency of 5 to 1000 Hz with a shear stress of >=103 N/m2. The portion of liquid subjected to shear at any moment should not exceed a total volume of 1-40%. The high shearing follows a zone of relaxation. The ratio of through put to shearing surface is 5.103 to 25.103 kg/m2h. The viscous liquid can contain up to 80% wt. of dispersed solids, and chemical reactions or crystallisation can occur during the process.
