Abstract: 5-Ply plastics film laminate, comprising a PVDC core lamina with thermoplastics film bonded to both surfaces, using adhesion-promoting layers, is prepd. by applying adhesion adjuvant dispersion onto a thermoplastics film and drying; applying an aq. dispersion or vinylidene chloride polymer onto the layer of adhesion adjuvant and drying; applying a further layer of adhesion adjuvant and drying; and laminating the composite prod, on that side coated with adhesion adjuvant, with a thermoplastics foil. The PVdC layer can be made very thin eg, 0.004-0.012 mm. Used for packaging of hygroscopic materials; and food packaging.

Abstract: Substrates coated with polyvinyl carbazole (I) which is made to adhere strongly to the substrate with an adhesion facilitating layer. This consists of a styrene-maleic acid anhydride (II) copolymer contg. about 5-30 wt. % maleic acid anhydride w.r.t. the polymer. Excellent adhesion of (I) to a variety of substrates is achieved by use of the (II) copolymer as an adhesion facilitating layer. In coated substrates the semi-conducting properties of (I) are combined with the substrate properties e.g. withe the toughness of shock resistant styrene, the flexibility of polyolefines, the strength of metals. The coated substrates can be used for the prpn. of e.g. flexible copying bands and for copying cylinders for light sensitive paper.

Abstract: Substrates coated with polyvinylcarbazole (I) which is made to adhere strongly to a substrate with an adhesion facilitating layer. This consists of a block copolymer of formula (X-Y)n or X-(Y-X)n (where X is a polystyrene block, Y a diene polymer block, and n = 1 to 3). The block copolymer contains 20-60 wt. % of styrene. Excellent adhesion of (I) to a variety of substrates is achieved by use of a styrene butadiene block copolymer as an adhesion facilitating layer. In coated substrates the semi-conducting properties of (I) are combined with the substrate properties e.g. with the toughness of shock resistant styrene, the flexibility of polyolefines, the strength of metals, the coated substrates can be used for the prepn. of e.g. flexible copying bands and for copying cylinders for light sensitive paper.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of foams by melting a thermoplastic, mixing the melt with a volatile blowing agent under a pressure of from 25 to 250 bar, decompressing the mixture to atmospheric pressure, and cooling the foam. The plastic employed is a copolymer comprising from 67 to 73 % by weight of alpha -methylstyrene and from 33 to 27 % by weight of acrylonitrile having a viscosity index of from 45 to 70 ml.g . The resultant foams of high heat distortion resistance can be used as insulating materials.

Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding compsn. comprises a copolymer (I) made impact resistant with a rubber (II) and which is prepd. by copolymerisation of a monovinyl aromatic cpd. with 2-12 wt.% (meth)acrylic acid deriv. in the presence of (II). The soft component content in the impact modified (I) is at least 28 wt.% (w.r.t. impact modified (I) and the tear strength of the compsn. is at least 5% above the corresponding tensile stress at yield (DIN53455). The particles of the disperse soft component phase in impact modified (I) have an an average dia. (wt. average) of at least 3.5 micron and the swelling index of the soft component in toluene is greater than 8.0. (I) is pref. prepd. from styrene and (meth)acrylic esters of 1-8C monoalcohols. (II) is e.g. polybutadiene, polyisoprene, their copolymers with styrene, EPDM etc. The compsn. has improved stress cracking resistance and good impact and solvent resistance flow. The compsn. can be used in food packaging and refrigerator parts.

Abstract: Thermoplastic laminates consisting of a transparent cover layer (A) over a carrier substrate (B), in which (A) consists of polycarbonate, low-melting thermoplastic polyester, transparent ABS or PMMA, and (B) consists of PVC or a styrene polymer. The two layers may be bonded together through one or more intermediate layers (C), and at least the layer adjacent to (A) is decoratively printed, embossed and/or dyed. Used as decorative coatings on internal walls, esp. of wet rooms, construction of furniture, and esp. for sanitary articles e.g. wash basins, showers, baths, filters, etc. Also for covering of sheet materials, e.g. chipboard. The laminates can be thermoformed and sharp bends (up to stretch ratio of 1:3) can be obtained without damage. Decorative effects are obtained by a simple and economic process and the hardness, scratch resistance, gloss and ability to remove surface damage by polishing, are retained.

Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding compsns. contain an impact-resistant rubber-modified copolymer, (A), prepd. by copolymerising a monovinyl aromatic cpd., esp. styrene, with 2-12 wt.% acrylic- or methacrylic acid deriv. in the presence of an elastomer. (1) Soft component proportion in (A) is at least 28 wt.% w.r.t. (A). The soft component is the toluene-insoluble portion of (A) less any pigments. (2) The particles of the dispersed soft component phase in (A) have wt. average dia. no less than 4 microns. (3) Soft component swelling index in toluene is over 9.5. (4) Thermoplastic moulding compsns. tensile strength, measured in tensile test according to DIN 53455 at pressed shoulder rod, is at least 5% above the inherent yield point. The moulding compsns. are used in the prodn. of refrigerator cabinets and food containers.

Abstract: Laminate comprises >=1 layer A and at least one layer B. Layer A contains >20% of a polyphenylene oxide of formula (I): (where n=103-104). Layer B is prepared from a styrene polymer, opt. modified w.r.t. impact resistance, contg. >40% styrene monomer polymerised therein, and is specifically an isotactic polystyrene, alone or admixed with an atactic polystyrene. A further layer C composed of atactic polystyrene and opt. modified w.r.t. fracture toughness, may be present as a welding and sealing layer. The excellent props. of the individual components of the laminate are maintained by using them in the form of layers which are bonded together.
