Abstract: The invention relates to halogen-containing compounds, to a process for the preparation thereof, and to the use of these compounds for flame-proofing thermoplastic synthetic materials. The halogen-containing compounds are described by the following general formula I. where y represents boron, aluminium and antimony, and the radicals and indices have the following significance: Rn: OH, R , R or R where it applies that: R : lower alkyl group or lower haloalkyl group, X: bromine or chlorine, k l: 0 or integers from 1 to 5 and also k + l max. 5; where it applies that: R : lower alkyl group or lower haloalkyl group, Z: bromine or chlorine, s, p: 0 or integers from 1 to 4 and also s + p = max. 4 where Rn, R , Z, s and p have the abovementioned meaning and it also applies that l + p = 1.

Abstract: Thermoplastic molding masses based on the copolymerization of styrene and/or alpha -methylstyrene and acrylonitrile, which may be modified to be impact resistant with rubberlike polymers, are made antistatic by adding 0.01 to 1.5 percent by weight of a graft polyol which is a polyhydroxy-polyalkylene polyether modified with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers.

Abstract: Halogen-containing s-triazine compounds of the formula I I where R is OH, R1, R2 or R3, R1 is where R4 is lower alkyl or lower haloalkyl, X is bromine or chlorine, k and n are 0 or integers from 1 to 5 and k+n is not more than 5, R2 is where R5 is lower alkyl or lower haloalkyl, Z is bromine or chlorine, s and p are 0 or integers from 1 to 4 and s+p is not more than 4, and R3 is where R, R5, Z, s and p have the above meanings. The compounds claimed are prepared by reacting cyanuric chloride with a phenol of the formula III III and a benzene derivative of the formula IV IV in the presence of a base. The products thereby obtained are used for flameproofing thermoplastics, in particular styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers made impact-resistant with rubber (ABS resins).

Abstract: A mixture of brominated oligomeric polystyrenes, having a degree of polymerization of from 3 to 400, and low molecular weight brominated aromatic compounds of the diphenyl ether type is obtained by polymerizing the non-brominated starting materials, in a halohydrocarbon solvent, using a Lewis acid catalyst. The reaction mixture is then brominated and extracted with water to remove hydrogen bromide and catalyst, and the solvent and volatile constituents are separated from the product. The bromination is carried out at from -30 DEG C. to +130 DEG C. The final mixtures have a low melt viscosity and are therefore particularly suitable for incorporation, as a flameproofing agent, into thermoplastics.

Abstract: Mixtures which essentially consist of a graft copolymer (A), a graft copolymer (B) and a hard component (C), the latter consisting of copolymers of stryrene and/or alpha -methylstyrene with acrylonitrile. The graft copolymers (A) and (B) are each based on a crosslinked acrylic ester rubber onto which is grafted a mixture of styrene and acrylonitirle. They differ only slightly in chemical composition, but differ substantially in the particle size of the acrylic ester base used for grafting. The weight ratio of the grafting bases can be from 90:10 to 35:65, and the proportion of the two grafting bases together, based on the total mixture, is from about 10 to 35 percent by weight. Mixtures of the above 3 components are weathering-resistant, exhibit a high impact strength, and are easy to color. The use of such mixtures by conventional thermoplastic processing methods, eg. extrusion or injection molding, gives, especially after the material has been colored, vitrually no difference in hue in the vicinity of a gate or of a weld line, so that a great variety of moldings for daily use or for leisure purposes can be produced.
