Abstract: A process for the production of an aqueous polymer dispersion (I) containing polymer particles, having a weight average particle diameter of no greater than 300 nm comprises polymerization in the presence of a radical chain transfer compound, having a solubility greater than 1x10 mole/kg water at 20 deg C and 1 bar absolute. At least one monomer, having an ethylenically unsaturated group, comprising less than 90 wt.% styrene, is homogeneously distributed in an aqueous medium and is polymerized by means of a radical initiator in the presence of a radical chain transfer compound, having a solubility greater than 1x10 mole/kg water at 20 deg C and 1 bar absolute. Independent claims are included for: (1) the polymer dispersion (I); and (2) a polymer powder prepared by drying the dispersion (I).

Abstract: A process for the prodn. of reusable fibre composite materials (FCM) contg. fibres (I) bonded together with a polymeric binder is claimed. The binder consists of an aq. dispersion of a polymer (II) which is film-forming at usage temps. and which goes entirely into soln. when the pH of the dispersion medium is changed. Also claimed is (i) material (FCM) obtd. by this process, esp. in the form of non-woven fabric or paper, and (ii) a process for recycling FCM, in which the FCM is treated with an aq. medium at a pH such that polymer (II) is dissolved to give fibres and binder soln., which are then sepd. and reused.

Abstract: A process is described for reducing the residual monomer content in a liquid solution, mixture, melt, suspension or dispersion of a polymer by postpolymerization with addition of a redox initiator system at a reaction temperature appropriate to it and with an extremely short mixing time of the liquid system in the production reactor by metering-gradually, in portions or continuously-at least one of the redox initiator components required to initiate polymerization of the residual monomers over a period (metering time) which is from about 10 to 250 times the mixing time of the liquid system in said reactor.

Steps (a) and (b) or (b) and (c) may be carried out together at 40-120 degrees C and the resulting dispersion from each step or all the steps is recirculated around a flow loop external to the reaction vessel containing a low shear pump and a heat exchanger exhibiting a laminar flow profile. An apparatus for carrying out the reaction is also claimed and comprises means for storing and feeding reactants and processing aids, a reactor vessel with a heating/cooling mantle and means for draining, an external flow loop with a low shear pump and heat exchanger exhibiting a laminar flow profile and necessary connecting pipes.

Abstract: Se presenta un proceso y un dispositivo correspondientemente apropiado para preparar homopolímeros o bien copolímeros de al menos uno de los monomeros polímerizables del grupo que consiste de estíreno, butadieno, cloruro de vinilo , acetato de vinilo, cloruro de vinilideno, (met)acrilato de alquilo, ácido (met)acrilico, (met)acrilontrilo y (met)acrilamída, en donde la reaccion de lleva a cabo a una temperatura de al menos 40 degree C en precencia de un auxiliar de dispersion y de un iniciador de polímerizacion de radicales libres de tal manera que al menos el 85% en peso del polímero se forma de estos monomeros. En el proceso de etapas multiples el procedimiento es tal que: a) en una etapa se agrega agua como solvente que es inerte en la reaccion, y auxiliares de dispersion, semillas y una primera porcion de monomero(s) se agregan, si se desea, b) en una etapa, se agrega un iniciador, y c) en una tercera etapa se agrega el resto del o de los monomero(s) directamente o bien en forma de emulsion y en presencia de agua adicional y, si se desea, auxiliar de dispersion adicional o bien otros auxiliares, es también posible llevar a cabo cualquiera de dos atapas en forma de una etapa unica. La mezcla de la reaccion que se encuentra en forma de emulsion, es desplazada en todas las etapas o bien en ciertas etapas a través de un circuito externo que lleva a partir del recipiente de reaccion y de regreso hacia dicho recipiente de reaccion y que comprende al menos una bomba de bajo esfuerzo cortante y al menos un intercambiador de calor que tiene un perfil de flujo esencialmente laminar. Los productos preparados mediante este proceso, que incluye un intercambiador de calor que tiene un perfil de flujo esencialmente laminar. Los productos preparados mediante este proceso incluye unos períodos cortos de preparacion, tienen buenas propiedades de desempeño (para uniones adhesivas, por ejemplo).
