    Abstract: Expandable styrene polymers (I) for elastic polystyrene foam contain (a) 50-75 wt.% polystyrene and/or a copolymer with at least 50 wt.% polystyrene, (b) 5-30 wt.% styrene-soluble elastomer(s), (c) 5-20 wt.% block copolymer(s) with a styrene component, (d) 15-50 wt.% polyolefin(s), (e) 1-15 wt.%, w.r.t. (a)+(b), of a low-boiling blowing agent and opt. (f) usual additives in effective amts. Also claimed are a method for producing (I); elastic foam with a density of 5-70 g/l prepd. from (I); and a method of producing mouldings from (I). Pref. (b) has a Tg below 20 degrees C and esp. is polybutadiene. (c) contains at least 20 wt.% styrene and is a styrene-butadiene (SB) block copolymer, esp. a SB diblock copolymer and/or SBS triblock copolymer. (d) is polyethylene, opt. mixed with polypropylene.

    Abstract: Expandable styrene polymers (I) for elastic polystyrene (PS) foam contain: (a) 50-90 wt.% PS and/or styrene copolymer contg. at least 50% styrene; (b) 5-30 wt.% styrene-soluble elastomer(s), (c) 5-20 wt.% styrene-contg. block copolymer(s); (d) 1-15 wt.% (w.r.t. a+b+c) low-boiling blowing agent(s), and opt. (e) conventional additives. In the unfoamed bead polymer, component (b) is present in the form of cellular particles and (c) is in the form of particles with a mean size of 0.2-2 microns in the PS phase. Also claimed are: (1) processes for the prodn. of (I) (see below); (2) elastic PS foam with a density of 15-70 g/l, contg. (a), (b), (c) and (e) in amts. as above; and (3) a process for the prodn. of elastic PS foam by heating (I) at a temp. above the softening pt. in a non-gastight mould so as to expand the particles and weld them together. Pref. (b) are styrene-soluble elastomers with a Tg of below 20 degrees C, pref. polybutadiene. (c) are styrene-butadiene (SB) block copolymers with a styrene content of at least 20 wt.%, pref. S-B diblock copolymers or S-B-S triblock copolymers or mixts. thereof.

    Abstract: This refrigerator- or freezer casing has a number of interconnected wall chambers. In the novel construction, the hard foam plastic walls have a density 10-60 kg m-3 and thermal conductivity 0.02-0.05 W m-1 [deg]K-1. The chambers are filled with particles of silica aerogel or pyrogenic silicic acid (solid silica foams), having a thermal conductivity of 0.012-0.026 W m-1 [deg]K-1. Also claimed is a procedure to make the expanded polystyrene structure. Prefoamed polystyrene foam particles are filled into a mould presenting the negative of the wall structure. The particles are sintered, using hot steam, completing the wall structure. The expanded silica is introduced, and the wall structure is then bonded to a rear wall, optionally similarly structured and filled. Pref. the chambers are internally-lined with stiff plastic, pref a polystyrene. The internal volume of the chambers occupies some 50-90 vol % of the foam structure. The mean thickness of the wall sections is 5-30 mm. Expanded, hard polystyrene foam is used. The mean diameter of the silica aerogel particles is between 0.001-6 mm and that of the pyrogenic silicic acid is 4- 40 nm. The casing wall structure and rear wall may be bonded, before filling with particles. The mould may form the wall and back structure; it is filled with the prefoamed particles and sintered, after which the inner lining is pushed in. The silica filling is then introduced. The filled, lined structure receives fastenings and a door.
