Abstract: Shaped articles of crosslinked ethylene polymers are produced by charging the non-crosslinked ethylene polymers (I) mixed with cross-linking agents (II) and stabilisers (III) against oxidative heat-decompsn., to a compression zone, where mixt. is subjected to an instantaneous, recurrent compression, of >2000 atmos each time. Matl. to be shaped is compressed by compression strokes or a machine and crosslinked there or later, esp. by heating. Esp. used for pipe prodn. Products resist ageing.

Abstract: In crosslinking profies of C2H4 polymers having density 0.93-0.945 g/cc and melt index 1.5-10 g/10 min., the profiles are heated to 80-120 degrees C before passing under a source of radiation where they are irradiated with electron rays having energy 0.5-3 x 106 e.v. in dosage 50-300 kGy. Electrical charge in profile walls is prevented. Radiation yield is high. Heating increases degree of crosslinking achieved. The hot profiles are pref. quenched with water at 20 degrees C immediately after irradiation.

Abstract: Electrical insulating compositions consisting of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing from 0.5 to 9.5 percent by weight of vinyl acetate units, from 0.1 to 2.0 percent by weight of polymerized 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline, from 0.5 to 5 percent by weight of a triallyl cyanurate and, optionally, up to 0.1 percent by weight of sulfur. The compositions can be crosslinked, with high yield, by treatment with high energy radiation.
