Abstract: Polypropylene moulding compsn. is based on a mixt. of 90-99 (wt.)% polypropylene (I) which is 1% soluble on boiling in xylene at a (I)/xylene ratio of 5:95 and cooling to room temp., and 1-10% polypropylene (II), which is >99% soluble under these conditions, (I) and (II) having (approx.) the same intrinsic viscosity and mol. wt. distribution (GPC method) and absolute intrinsic viscosity value in the 1-10 range (in decalin at 130 degrees C). The novelty is that the compsn. also contains 3-30% hydrocarbon resin (II) with a softening point of 90-140 degrees C (ASTM E28/58T) and a bromine no. of under 5 g. Br/100g. (ASTM D1159), homogeneously blended with (I) and (II). The compsn. is useful for making undrawn, uni- or bi-axially oriented and laminated films and other articles, e.g. packaging tapes and injection mouldings. (III) improves the surface gloss.

Abstract: Polyolefin moulding material consists of (I) 40-60 wt. % polyethylene, and (II) 40-60 wt. % of a mixt. of (a) 70-90 wt. % polypropylene contg. 1 wt. % material sol. in boiling toluene, at a polypropylene:toluene wt. ratio of 5:95 and (b) 10-30 wt. % polypropylene contg. >99 wt. % material sol. in boiling toluene, at a polypropylene:toluene wt. ratio of 5:95, both polypropylenes having approx. the same mol. wt. distribution, as determined by the gel permeation chromatography method. (I) has a density of 0.935-0.965 g/cm3 and a melt flow index of 1-4g/10 min. (by DIN 53735, at 230 degrees C and 2.16 kg load), and (II) has a density of 0.895-0.910 g/cm3 and a melt flow index of 1-4 g/10 min. the absolute values of the melt flow indices of (I) and (II) being approx. the same. The moulding material has excellent physical props. esp. a good cold impact resistance, and bonding weld strength of injection moulded articles.

Abstract: Master batches for talcum-contg. moulding compsns. contain, by wt., 100 pts. talcum, 20-100 pts. monoolefin polymer, and also stabiliser compsn. contg. (i) 0.1-20 pts. phenolic antioxidant, (I), (ii) 0.1-30 pts. thioacid ester (II) (iii) 0.1-30 pts. B cpds. (III). The stabiliser compsn. improves the heat-stability of the moulding compsns. and allows prodn. of injection-moulded talcum-contg. propylene polymer articles. In an example, master batches for adding to polypropylene contained talcum, polypropylene, tri-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-isocyanurate, dilauryl thio-dipropionate and Zn borate.

However (i) the sum of the wt. % of components (1) and (2) as well as (a) and (b) resp. amts. to 100, (ii) the polypropylene under (a) and (b) show approx. the same m.w. distribution (determined by gel-permeation chromatography) (iii) the polyethylene has a density between 0.935 and 0.965g cm-3 and Melt Flow Index (MFI) (DIN 53735 at 230 degrees C and 2.16kg loading) of 4-15g 10 min-1 and (iv) the polypropylene mixt. has a density from 0.895-0.910 g cm-3 and MFI of 4-15g 10 min-1 the absolute values of the MFI of polyethylene (1) and polypropylene mixt. (2) being approx. identical.

Abstract: Thermoplastic sound-absorbing materials consisting of (1) a mixt. of (a) 70-90 parts polypropylene of which less than 1 wt.% is soluble a boiling with xylene in ratio 5:95 and cooling to room temp., and (b) 30-10 parts polypropylene in which over 99 wt. % is soluble when tested as above, and (2) BaSO4 with particle size 0.1-100 mu m. The compsn. contain 5-45% (1) and 95-55% (2). Used for mfr. of sound-insulating products by usual methods (moulding, injection-moulding or extrusion) including semi-finished products for insulation of machines, vehicles, etc. Satisfactory acoustic properties are combined with good mechanical properties, e.g. elongation, shear modulus hardness, strength, tensile and impact strength.
