    Abstract: Prodn. of halo-substd. isatoic anhydrides of formula (I) is claimed (where Y is H or 1-4C alkyl, and R1,R2 and R3 are H, Cl, Br, NO2, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkyl, CF3, 1-4C alkanoylamino, carbamoyl, mono- or di(1-4C alkyl) carbamoyl, sulphamoyl or mono- or di(1-4C alkyl) carbamoyl, provided that at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is/are Cl or Br). Process comprises halogenating corresponding isatoic anhydrides in which at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is/are H with at least 0.5 molar proportions of elementary chlorine or bromine in the presence of chlorosulphonic acid at -10 to +100 deg.C.

    Abstract: Tetrachloro-3-imino- isoindolin-1-one (I) or its alkali metal salts (Ia) is prepd. by reacting tetrachloro-orthophthalodinitrile (II) with LiOH, NaOH and/or KOH in substantially anhydrous tert. butanol as solvent, and opt. liberating the (I) from the (Ia) formed by treatment with a dil. acid: M = Li, Na, K. Pref. the finely divided alkali metal hydroxide is used in an amt. of 1.0-5.0 mol. per mol. (III), and the tert. butanol has a water content of less than 5 wt. % and is used in an amt. of 5-15 times the wt. of (II). The reaction is carried out at 26-80 deg. C.

The prepn. of (I) and (II) (not claimed) is as described in EP74048. (II) are prepd. by diazotising the corresp. anthranilate ester and coupling with isoquinoline. (I) are prepd. similarly.
