Abstract: Opt. unsatd. 10-22C fatty alcohol(s) are reacted with epichlorohydrin in mol. ratio 1:0.5 to 1:1.5. The glycidyl ethers obtd. are reacted with 2-6C polyhydric alcohols contg. 2-6 O OH gps. or with their monoethers with 10-22C fatty alcohols, in the presence of acids or bases. Mol. ratio glycidyl ether: alcohol is 1:0.5-6. The reaction prods. are further reacted with 1-60 mol of >=1 2-4C alkylene oxide. Prods. reacted with 1-5 mol ethylene oxide are water-in-oil emulsifiers, e.g. for hydrocarbon-based cosmetic creams. They yield softer creams than original emulsifiers. Prods. reacted with 6-20 mol ethylene oxide are oil-in-water emulsifiers, e.g. for cosmetic lotions. Prods. reacted with 21-60 mol ethylene oxide are solubilisers for ethereal oils. Prods. reacted with 1-15 (3-10) mol 1,2-propylene oxide and/or 1,2-butylene oxide are oil-soluble, fatty materials, which cannot be saponified and are more heat-stable than natural fats. In an example, 2.5 mol of a water-in-oil emulsifier of Parent Patent were reacted with 2.5 mol ethylene oxide at 80-100 degrees C and 4-9 bar, using a BF3-H3PO4 catalyst. Liq. obtd. had excellent water-in-oil emulsifier properties and was used in a cream contg. 20% vaseline and 71.5% water.
