Abstract: Process for open and closed loop control of the melting and bonding process during the jointing (welding, riveting, embedding, flanging, tamping) of mouldings of reinforced or unreinforced thermoplastics as well as during the embedding process of components of a non-thermoplastic nature in reinforced or unreinforced thermoplastic materials by means of ultrasonic energy, in which the electrical power converted in an ultrasonic converter during the jointing process is continually measured and its variation over time is compared with a preset empirically determined master function, the positive or negative deviations resulting from this comparison effecting the process of movement of the sonotrode in such a manner that differences between the preset master curve and the determined power curve become a minimum, by which means an optimum oscillation coupling between sonotrode and joint part is achieved and optimum, reproducible joint results are thus obtained.

Abstract: Laminates comprise >=3 layers A, B and C, such that A and C consist of similar or different thermoplastics, and the middle layer B consists of a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic and the layers are strongly bonded together. The layer B consists of a block copolymer of formula (X-Y)n or X-(Y-X)n where X=polystyrene, Y=a diene polymer and n=1, 2 or 3, in which the fibrous reinforcement is embedded. Used for screens, wall elements, decorative panels, etc. and mouldings. Laminates of thermoplastics with glass mat interlayers are known but adhesion is poor unless the glass is specially treated. Rigid materials such as impact resistant polystyrene lose their toughness and soft prods. Such as polyethylene are not sufficiently rigid. These disadvantages are avoided if the glass fibres are embedded in a rubbery, elastic but easy flowing and mouldable thermoplast. Such prods. adhere well to both glass fibres (without pretreatment) and impact resistant polystyrene. A laminate with outer layers of polystyrene and polyethylene comprised alternate inner layers of glass mat and a styrene-butadiene block copolymer contg. 40 wt. % styrene.

Abstract: Films; textiles and webs are at least partially treated with crosslinkable and/or hardenable resins, and ultrasonically welded while compressing together. The new process is fast, preheating and cooling are not needed and there is rarely any disscolouration. Laminates may be easily prepd. and used as e.g. cushioning, wall coverings, car interiors, throw-away articles and blankets. In an example, a cotton fabric was coated with a mixt. of an acrylic dispersion and ultrasonically welded to an uncoated cotton fabric using a frequency of 20 khz. and amplitude of 30 mu m for 0.5 seconds under a pressure of 2 bar.
