Abstract: A multi-layer plate of thermoplastics consists of two or more sheets bonded together, one of the sheets possessing upstanding ribs or projections, while the other sheet constitutes a cover sheet. This cover sheet has apertures through it, and the cavities between the ribs of the opposite sheet are filled with fibrous filler. Pref. the ribbed sheet is produced by passing the soft thermoplastics material between two rolls, one of which has the necessary cavities for moulding the ribs; after leaving this pair of rolls, this sheet passes through a second roll gap into which the cover sheet, together with the fibrous material, is supplied so that the two sheets are bonded together. The arrangement results in a composite panel which is stiff against bending to an equal extent in all directions and possesses good insulating properties.

Abstract: Moldings, for example hollow articles, are produced by sintering a thermoplastic powder or granular material and then reshaping the resulting blank by thermoforming. Sintering is carried out in a mold cavity under pressure, by exposure to high-frequency vibrations, which heats the plastic to a temperature intermediate between its softening point and its melting point. In this way, grain boundary adhesion between the individual plastic particles constituting the blank results, and the directly subsequent thermoforming can be carried out without additional supply of heat.

Abstract: Thermoplastic mouldings are produced by extruding molten polymer through the gap between counter-rotating rollers and calendering into film or sheet, this is shaped (at least in parts) and stamped out. The calendering pressure is sufficiently high to produce preforms from the film/sheet; these are moulded and stamped out from the web. Minimum wastage of material in contrast with e.g. deep drawing or stamping from continuous extruded material.

Abstract: Laminate comprises an Al film covering layer and a cold formed thermoplastic resin inner layer pref. of polyolefin or polyamide esp. Al needle or Al coarse powder filled nylon 6 or 6,6. The layers may be bonded using an adhesive film. The laminate is prepd. by pressing the layers and opt. the adhesive film at 20-200 bar and above the temp. of the resin for 5-60 sec. The laminate is ductile with the mechanical properties of Al but with the other physical properties of the resin inner layer. The resin shows no deformation caused by relaxation. The laminate can be used in deep drawing, or flow press parts e.g. cans, cups, ammunition cartridges or condenser casings.

Abstract: Semi-finished plastic prod. e.g. a tube, produced by extruding a molten plastic material from an extruder towards a calibration device connected to an electrically driven, withdrawing device. The extrudate is transported between the extruder and the calibration device without use of an intermediate volume-compensating vessel, and the withdrawal velocity is controlled by using the pressure on the molten mass in the extruder as control parameter. System accurately controls the extrusion, transportation, calibration and withdrawal of the extrudate. Damage to the extrudate is avoided. The extrudate has a smooth uniform surface without marks or grooves, and a uniform size over its entire length.

Abstract: Process for open and closed loop control of the melting and bonding process during the jointing (welding, riveting, embedding, flanging, tamping) of mouldings of reinforced or unreinforced thermoplastics as well as during the embedding process of components of a non-thermoplastic nature in reinforced or unreinforced thermoplastic materials by means of ultrasonic energy, in which the electrical power converted in an ultrasonic converter during the jointing process is continually measured and its variation over time is compared with a preset empirically determined master function, the positive or negative deviations resulting from this comparison effecting the process of movement of the sonotrode in such a manner that differences between the preset master curve and the determined power curve become a minimum, by which means an optimum oscillation coupling between sonotrode and joint part is achieved and optimum, reproducible joint results are thus obtained.

Abstract: In this process measured values and data are recorded by a thickness measuring instrument traversing perpendicularly to the extrusion direction, digitised into pulses and the actual values determined are compared with digitised set point values. At the same time a local transverse profile and a longitudinal profile, temporarily superimposed on said transverse profile, of the flat films or sheets are recorded. In said process, the measurement path is subdivided, parallel to the extrusion direction, into a plurality of zones, correlating with control zones of an extrusion die. A mean thickness value is formed from each accepted zone on the flat films or sheets, is compared with the computed set point values and the result is used in the production process for control purposes. An overall mean value is then generated from the mean values of all zones, this overall mean value is compared with the overall mean value of a previous or subsequent traverse of the thickness measuring instrument and the take-off rate of the flat films or sheets is varied corresponding to the differences ascertained. A device for carrying out the process consists of a slit die which is subdivided, parallel to the extrusion direction of the flat films or sheets, into a plurality of control zones which can be temperature-controlled independently of one another and of a thickness measuring instrument which is traversable perpendicularly to the extrusion direction and is connected to a power setting unit and/or a process computer controlling a take-off device.
