Abstract: An aqueous bleaching bath primarily for the treatment of cellulose fibres, e.g. cotton, contains 1-30 grams per litre of an alkali metal chlorite, 1-30 grams per litre of at least one ester of an organic acid, which ester melts below 60 DEG C., is insoluble in the bath and is in emulsified form, and sufficient emulsifier to form a stable emulsion. The esters used are preferably those formed by esterifying monobasic or polybasic aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic acids containing up to 10 carbon atoms, which may be substituted by hydroxyl groups or halogen atoms, with aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic mono- or poly-alcohols, and preferably have boiling points above 100 DEG C. Specified esters are butane-diol-1, 4-diacetate, dibutyl tartrate, diethyl phthalate, dipropyl oxalate, butyl propionate and benzyl acetate. Suitable emulsifiers, which may be present in concentrations of 1-30 grams per litre, are octadecyl alcohol polyglycol ethers with 6-12 mols of ethylene oxide, oleic acid diethanolamide, triethanolamine monostearic acid ester, alkyl sulphonates and fatty alcohol sulphates, e.g. lauryl sulphate and octadecyl sulphate. The bath may be prepared by converting the ester, with the emulsifier and a little water, into a concentrated emulsion, the desired amount of which is added to the bath containing the alkali metal chlorite and any other additives, e.g. anticorrosion agents, such as fluorides and nitrates, and aldehydes, or the ester and emulsifier may be stirred into the bath before emulsification. Specification 764,649 is referred to.

Abstract: In the dyeing of textile yarns with vat or sulphur dyestuffs on skein yarn or spray dyeing machines, improved results are obtained by employing as the reducing agent (a) an alkali-metal or ammonium salt of a linear or branched hydroxyalkyl sulphinic acid with 2-4 carbon atoms in which the hydroxyl group and the sulphinic acid group are attached to the same carbon atom or (b) a derivative of ammonia which contains at least once, directly attached to the nitrogen atom, the radical of an alkali-metal or ammonium salt of a linear or branched alkylsulphinic acid with 2-4 carbon atoms in which the nitrogen atom and the sulphur atom are attached to the same carbon atom, or a mixture of the two salts. Specified derivatives of ammonia are the reaction products of the alkali-metal or ammonium salts of a hydroxyalkyl sulphinic acid with 2-4 carbon atoms with methylamine, dimethylamine, isopropylamine, nbutylamine, ethylene diamine, hydrazine or urea. Examples describe the dyeing of yarns of cotton, mercerised cotton and regenerated cellulose staple fibres.

Abstract: A process for dyeing cellulose fibers and mixtures of the same with synthetic fibers in an aqueous liquor by the exhaustion method in the presence of a water-soluble polymer of acrylic acid or an alkali metal salt or ammonium salt thereof, an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a copolymer of maleic acid and styrene, maleic acid and a vinyl ester or maleic acid and a vinyl ether as a dyeing assistant in an amount of from 0.05 to 2% by weight based on the material being dyed. Level dyeings are obtained and mixtures of fibers can be dyed in a single liquor.

Abstract: The fastness to rubbing of vat, azoic, reactive or pigment dyeings or prints on cellulose-containing textile materials is improved by aftertreating with an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer obtained from a mixture of 1%-25% by weight of an etherified or unetherified N-methylol amide of acrylic or methacrylic acid with 99%-75% by weight of one or more other components capable of copolymerising therewith, and then heating to at least 120 DEG C. The process is applicable to textiles containing, in addition to cellulose fibres, fibres of polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyesters, cellulose esters, regenerated protein, wool or silk. Specified compounds capable of copolymerizing with the acrylic or methacrylic N-methylolamide, or ether thereof, are the following: esters of acrylic, methacrylic, maleic or fumaric acid, nitriles of unsaturated carboxylic acids, N-disubstituted amides of unsaturated carboxylic acids, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate, vinyl and vinylidene halides, vinyl or vinylidene cyanide, vinyl ketones such as vinyl methyl ketone, styrene, C-vinyl pyridine, N-vinylimidazole, N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylcaprolactam, N-vinyl pyridine, unsaturated aldehydes such as acrolein and methacrolein, and esters of unsaturated alcohols, such as those of allyl and methallyl alcohol. Examples are given.
