Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for continuously producing an alkali metal salt of L-ascorbic acid at an inexpensive cost of apparatus without causing reduction in yield. SOLUTION: In the case of producing the alkali metal salt of L-ascorbic acid by a method including a process (a) for esterifying 2-keto-L-gluconic acid or diacetone-2-keto-L-gluconic acid with a 1-10C alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst and a process (b) for rearranging a formed 2-keto-L-gluconic acid 1-10C alkyl ester in the presence of a 1-10C alkali metal alcoholate, the treatment process (a) and the treatment process (b) are continuously carried out.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for separating an azeotropic mixture economical and simple from an aspect of process engineering. SOLUTION: The method for separating a liquid mixture comprising at least two kinds of components A and B, which form the azeotropic mixture mutually or along with other component, includes a process (i) for distilling the mixture to be separated in the presence of an auxiliary H, which forms a two-component azeotropic mixture AH or BH having a boiling point lower than that of the auxiliary H along with two kinds of the components A and B, and a process (ii) for isolating an A, H-containing fraction of which the content of B is reduced as compared with the mixture to be separated and a B, H-containing fraction of which the content of A is reduced as compared with the mixture to be separated.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing L-ascorbic acid representing no drawbacks involved in the corresponding conventional technology. SOLUTION: This method for producing L-ascorbic acid comprises lactonization of a solution containing a 2-keto-L-gulonic acid-3-10C alkyl ester under an acidic condition; wherein the lactonization is preferably carried out in an inert solvent immiscible with water in the presence of a mineral acid; alternatively, it is preferable that, the lactonization is carried out in a halocarbon in the presence of aqueous hydrochloric acid; in this case, the halocarbon as inert solvent to be used is selected from the group consisting of dichloromethane, chloroform and perchloroethylene.
