    Abstract: Prepn. of esterified block polymers of ethylene oxide and 1,2-propyleneoxide comprises esterifying block polymers of formula A-B-A (I) (A=a polyethyleneoxide block, B a polypropylene oxide block) in the presence of acid catalysts, with dicarboxylic acid at high temperature. The block copolymers are esterified using 0.5-3 wt.% of (a) >=1 8-12C alkylbenzene sulphonic acid or (b) a 4-10C alkane or alkene carboxylic acid, without intermediate neutralisation. The block copolymers do not need to be neutralised before esterification and no salts are pptd. when the final ester is used to break up oil in water emulsions. The esters can be used to break up oil emulsions from various sources. In an example 1 mol of a block copolymer obtd. by alkaline oxyethylation of 1,2-propyleneoxide, was esterified, without neutralisation, at 150 degrees C with 0.5 mol adipic acid and in the presence of 0.18 Mol % p-n-dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid to give an ester. This is suitable for breaking up oil in H2O emulsions without pptd. of salts.
