    Abstract: The invention comprises omega-aminoketocarboxylic acids of the general Formula (I) wherein m is an integer of 5 to 15 and n is an integer of 5 to 12 with the proviso that m + n is between 14 and 22, and a process for the preparation of acids of said general formula without said proviso, and salts thereof, by subjecting compounds of the general Formula (II) wherein m is 5 to 15 and n is 5 to 12, to acid or alkaline hydrolysis. The reaction is preferably performed at a temperature of 80 DEG to 110 DEG C. and at a pH other than pH 1 to 13 using, for example, aqueous solutions of, for example, sodium, potassium or calcium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, hydrogen chloride or bromide, sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid, or a solution of sodium hydroxide in ethylene glycol monomethylether. The reaction mixture may be worked up by extraction with an organic solvent, acidification of the aqueous phase if it is alkaline, and evaporation to dryness of the aqueous phase; the residue, if desired, being extracted with a hot polar organic solvent, the extract evaporated to dryness, and the residue crystallized from hot acid, alkali or water. The compounds of Formula (II) may be prepared by the process described in Specification 1,049,769.

    Abstract: Concentrated solutions of basic dyes comprise a salt of a basic dye with a water-soluble carboxylic acid and an anhydrous or water-containing solvent miscible in all proportions with water and selected from polyhydric alcohols and esters and ethers thereof, polyethers, amides, lactones, nitriles, dimethyl sulphoxide, tetrahydrofuran and dioxan. The dye solutions may be used to make non-drying inks by dilution with, e.g. ethylene glycol, for use in self-recording instruments, stamp-pads and typewriter ribbons. The dye solutions may contain excess, e.g. 1.5 to 2 times the stoichiometric equivalent, of water-soluble acid and may also contain water up to 50% by weight of the solvent. The solutions may contain 20-80% by weight of basic dye, the preferred dyes being from the diarylmethane, triarylmethane and diazapolymethine series. Specified acids are fromic, acetic, propionic, maleic and lactic acids. Numerous solvents are specified the preferred ones being ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, formamide and dimethylformamide. The preferred method of preparing the dye solutions comprises dissolving the carbinol base of the basic dye, which may still be water-wet, in a mixture of water-soluble acid and said solvent. Specified acids are formic, acetic, propionic, maleic and lactic acids. The preferred method of preparing the dye solutions comprises dissolving the carbinol base of the basic dye, which may still be water-wet, in a mixture of water-soluble acid and said solvent.     Abstract: The invention comprises concentrated solutions containing 20% to 60% by weight of a salt of the auramine base of Auramine O or Auramine G with sulphuric acid or a water-soluble derivative thereof namely sulphamic acid, chlorosulphonic acid or a monoester of sulphuric acid such as monomethyl sulphate or monoethyl sulphate, in a possibly water-containing organic solvent which is miscible with water in all proportions, which is liquid at room temperature and which has a boiling point higher than 80 DEG C. Other water-miscible solvents which boil at less than 80 DEG C. may also be present. The invention also comprises a process for making auramine sulphates by treating an auramine base in an organic solvent with a water-soluble hydrogen sulphate or with sulphuric acid and a compound capable of forming a water-soluble hydrogen sulphate with sulphuric acid. The concentrated solutions mentioned above are made by dissolving an auramine sulphate in the water-miscible solvent or by reacting the sulphuric acid or acid derivative with the auramine base in the water-miscible solvent or in a non-polar solvent which is immiscible with the water-miscible solvent, then adding the water-miscible solvent to dissolve the product and separating the solvents.
