    Abstract: Prepn. of 2-aroylethanesulphonic acids (I) comprises reacting a beta-sulphopropionic acid anhydride (II) with an aromatic cpd. (III) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a chloride or bromide of Al, Fe, Ti, Zr, Sb, Tl, Sn, Ga, Te, Cu, Be, Hg, Zn, Mo, Re or Bi and/or Bf3. High yields are obtd. (e.g. 40-92%). (where R1 is an aromatic gp.; R2 and R3 are H or aliphatic gps.). Also claimed are (I) where R1-R3 are as defined above but R2 and R3 can both be H only when R1 is a polynuclear or cycloalkylene-fused aromatic gp., or a phenyl gp. substd. by cycloaliphatic, aliphatic, halogen, alkanoylamino and/or >=2C alkoxy gps., or a phenyl gp. substd. by one or more of these substituents and MeO gps., or a phenyl gp. substd. by 1 or >=3 MeO gps. (I) are intermediates for dyes, detergents and textile assistants. Reaction with isobenzofuroxanes gives quinoxaline di-N-oxides for use as growth regulators (GB 1308370). Reaction with NH2OH gives oximes for use as chelating agents.
