Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easy and economical method for producing a metal coated hard material. SOLUTION: A soln., in which a hard material such as diamond, cubic boron nitride, boron carbide, silicon carbide and silicon nitride or the carbide, nitride, boride, silicide or the like of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium and molybdenum, and a hard material of metallic carbonyl such as iron pentacarbonyl are suspended, is heated and decomosed, and a metallic layer is formed on the surface of the hard material. Moreover, the metallic layer can be formed on the hard material from metallic carbonyl present in the state of the vapor phase.
