Abstract: Baking finishes having a high solids content contain, as the binder, a copolymer of one or more mono-acrylate or monomethacrylate of an alkanediol, an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature of below -40 DEG C., an ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature of above 35 DEG C. and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, which copolymer has a Fikentscher K value of from 13 to 17 and may or may not be used in combination with conventional aminoplast precondensates having a crosslinking action. These baking finishes are particularly useful as binders for automotive finishes.

Abstract: Butanediol-1,3)-1-mono-(3'-hydroxybutyrates) of formula (I) are new R2-CH2-CHOH-CHR'-COOCH2-CHR'--CHOH-CH2R2 (I) (where individual gps. R' and R2 are opt. same and denote H or an aliphatic gp). (I) are prepd. by reaction of butanediol-(1,3)-3-mono-(3'-hydroxybutyrates) of formula R2-CH2-CHOH-CHR'-COO-CH(CH2R2)-CHR'-CH2OH (Ii) at 120-220 degrees C. (I) are starting materials for prepn. of polyesters, esp. those stable to saponification polyurethanes, plastics and plasticisers. (I) can be reacted with fumaric acid or maleic anhydride for 8 hrs. at 180-200 degrees C to form polyesters which copolymerise with 30 wt.% styrene to a on-saponificaable, water-repellant resin, useful as swimming-pool lacquers, outdoor paints, weather-proof wood finishes. (I) can also react in 1:2 mol ratio with (meth)acrylic acid to form bi-functional monomers for synthesis of radiation hardenable lacquers, e.g. on wood, plastics, paper, metal, in combination with unsatd. polymers. (I) can form cross-linkable coatings which can be sprayed on and have high gloss.

Abstract: Low solvent stoving enamels comprise (A) an acrylate resin; (B) an epoxide resin; (C) a mixt. of organic solvents, and opt. pigments, catalysts and other additives. (A) is a copolymer, contg. in polymeric linking, 10-35% carboxylic acids contg. alpha:beta-ethylenic links and having a Fikentscher K value of 15 and an acid value of 70-250 mg. KOH/g. (B) contains >=2 oxirane gps/mol., (C) comprises 20-80% of a solvent boiling at 100-280 degrees C and dielectric constant of 2-4.99, and 80-20% of a solvent boiling at 80-200 degrees C and dielectric constant 5-27. The wt. ratio of (A)/(B) is 5 to 27 and the wt. ratio of (A+B)/(C) is 7/3 to 5/5. Used for painting household appliances and as undercoating layers for cars. They may be applied from prepns. contg. very little solvent. In an example, prepns. contg. >70% esp. 75-85% dry wt., may be sprayed onto vertical surfaces where they flow out well and on stoving form coatings having good mechanical props, resistance to chemical agents and solvents and showing good protection against corrosion. They may also be applied onto vertical surfaces to form layers 40 um thick, without running and without the presence of thixotropic agents.

Abstract: Baking finishes of low solvent content, which have a viscosity of from 20 to 300 DIN seconds, measured in a DIN cup No. 4, and comprise from 40 to 85% by weight of hydroxyl-containing polymers, from 10 to 55% by weight of amine/formaldehyde resins and from 5 to 35% by weight of polyisocyanates, and may also contain up to 15% by weight of monohydric or dihydric alcohols, up to 35% by weight of solvents, up to 65% by weight of pigments and fillers and up to 3% by weight of crosslinking catalysts. The finishes are particularly suitable for coating automotive components.
