    Abstract: Surface-coating binders based on a copolymer which contains tertiary amino groups, blocked isocyanate groups, hydroxyl groups and ether groups and which, due to partial or complete salification with an acid, is water-soluble or water-dispersible. The copolymer contains, as copolymerized units, an olefinically unsaturated compound possessing a tertiary amino group, an N-(alk-1-enyl) isocyanate blocked with a CH-, OH- or NH-acidic blocking agent, and an adduct of an epoxy resin based on bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin, andhaving a molecular weight of from 380 to 3,500, with an olefinically unsaturated alcohol of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, and with an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, with or without one or more other copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated compounds, and has a mean molecular weight of from 1,000 to 20,000. The novel surface-coating binder is useful, either as a self-crosslinking binder or as a binder which needs an external crosslinking agent, for the cathodic electrocoating of metallic articles.

    Abstract: A process for coating electrically conductive objects comprising A. immersing said object as the anode of an electric current in an aqueous polyurethane dispersion prepared by (1) forming a polyurethane solution by reacting an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of an organic solvent with (a) an acrylic ester diol having a molecular weight of between 146 and 3,000; (b) an organic polyhydroxyl compound other than (a) having a molecular weight between 400 and 5,000 selected from the group consisting of polyester, polyols, polyether polyols, polycarbonates, polylactones, and mixtures thereof; and (c) a chain extender selected from the group consisting of diols, triols, diamines, aminoalcohols, having a molecular weight between 62 and 400, water, and mixtures thereof; (2) forming an anionic polyurethane addition product by reacting said polyurethane solution with a mercaptocarboxylic acid salt in the presence of a solvent; (3) adding water; and (4) removing the organic solvent, and B. passing an electric current between the anode and a cathode which is also dispersed in said dispersion, and C. irradiating said object with ultraviolet radiation or electron rays. The process can be used for coating metals such as iron, steel and aluminum.

    Abstract: Baking finishes having a high solids content contain, as the binder, a copolymer of one or more mono-acrylate or monomethacrylate of an alkanediol, an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature of below -40 DEG C., an ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature of above 35 DEG C. and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, which copolymer has a Fikentscher K value of from 13 to 17 and may or may not be used in combination with conventional aminoplast precondensates having a crosslinking action. These baking finishes are particularly useful as binders for automotive finishes.
