Abstract: Catalytic hydrogenation (H2) of maleic acid (VI) or anhydride (IV), succinic acid (VII) or anhydride (V) or fumaric acid (VIII) gives THF (I) and gamma-butyrolactone (II), and 1,4-butanediol, (III). The catalyst is composed of oxides of cobalt (40-60% wt., as metal), copper (13-17 wt.%), molybdenum (0.5-5 wt.% as MoO3), manganese (0-8 wt.% as metal) and phosphorus (0.1-5% wt. as H3PO4). Temps. for reaction are 150-350 deg.C, pressures 50-350 bar. The starting materials can be used molten, or in soln., suitable solvents being water, gamma-butyrolactone, dioxan, tetrahydropyran, tetrahydrofuran, diethyl ether. Prod. ratios depend upon temp., reaction time (throughput) and catalyst compsns. Catalysts suitable are for example, 3% H3PO4, 64.2% CoO (50.5% Co) 18.5% CuO (14.8% Cu), 6.7% Mn3O4 (4.8% Mn) and 3.7% MoO3; also 3% H3PO4, 64.2% CoO, 18.5% CuO, 3.7% MoO3 (all % are wt.%). Ideal temp. is 170-250 deg.C, ideal pressures 250-300 bar.

Abstract: Glyoxal is prepared by oxidizing glycol in the presence of a silver catalyst, with subsequent or partial condensation of glycol, glyoxal, glycol aldehyde, formaldehyde and/or water by treatment with water or aqueous glyoxal solution in fine dispersion, under specific conditions with regard to the temperature and dispersion of the treatment liquid. The glyoxal which can be prepared by the process of the invention is a wrinkle-resist agent, an assistant for increasing the tear strength and elasticity of fiber materials, a tanning agent, a photographic hardener and a valuable starting material for the production of synthetic resins, textile assistants, paper assistants and plastics.
