Abstract: Process comprises first epoxidising a diene polymer, contg. >20 mol.% polymerised diene units, with organic peracids or with organic acid and H2O2 mixts., to reach a content of 0.1-1 equiv. epoxide gps./100 g diene polymer. The epoxidised diene polymer obtd. is converted to a quat. ammonium gp.-contg. polymer by reacting with >=1 tert. amine in the presence of acid and opt. water. A part of the OH gps. of the quat. ammonium gp.-contg. polymer is opt. reacted with partly masked polyisocyanate. (A) are used as cationic binders for aq. stoving lacquers, esp. in the cathodic electro-dip lacquering of metal parts, e.g. car parts and household articles. Lacquers have high bath-stability, and form coatings having high elasticity, adhesion, resistance to chemicals and corrosion-proofing activity.

Abstract: Cationic binders for aq. stoving lacquers are prepd. by (i) epoxidising a diene polymer contg. >=20mol.% polymerised diene units up to 0.1-1 equiv. epoxide pgs./100g diene polymer; (ii) reacting the epoxidised diene polymer with prim. or sec. amines to form tert. amino gps.; (iii) converting the tert. amino gps. to quat. ammonium gps. by reacting the prod. of (ii) with 1,2-epoxide cpds. contg. 1-2 epoxide gps/mol. in the presence of acids and opt. (iv) reacting a part of the OH gps. of the quat. ammonium gp.-contg. polymers with partly masked polyisocyanate. The binders are used for the cathodic electro-dip lacquering of metal parts, esp. car parts and household articles. The electro-dip lacquers have high bulk-stability and yield coatings having high elasticity, adhesion, resistance to chemicals and corrosion-protecting properties. The epoxide gp. contg. cpds. used for quaternising in (iii) effect easier alkoxylation than the epoxide gps. of the epoxidised diene polymer itself. No malodorous prods. are dissociated on stoving.

Abstract: Polyadducts, free from epoxide groups, are obtained from ammonia and epoxide compounds by reacting 1 mole of ammonia with from 1.2 to 2.0 equivalents of epoxide, so that if diepoxide compounds are used products of the general formula (I) are obtained, while if triepoxides and/or tetraepoxide compounds are used, by themselves, or together with diepoxide compounds, products of the general formula II (II) are produced; in these formulae, the E1's are identical or different hydroxyl-containing divalent radicals and the E2's are identical or different hydroxyl-containing trivalent or tetravalent radicals, resulting from the opening of the oxirane rings of epoxide compounds containing two, three or four epoxide groups in the molecule, n1, n3 and n5 are from 0 to 3, n2 and n4 are from 1 to 3 and X is 0 or 1, and one or more of the divalent radicals E1 in the general formlula (II) may or may not be replaced by polyvalent radicals E2. The novel polyadducts can be modified by reaction with aldehydes, ketones, monoepoxide compounds, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid esters or isocyanates, or by protonation with an acid, and may be used, for example, for the cathodic electrocoating of metallic articles.
