Abstract: Cationic binders for aq. stoving lacquers are prepd. by (i) epoxidising a diene polymer contg. >=20mol.% polymerised diene units up to 0.1-1 equiv. epoxide pgs./100g diene polymer; (ii) reacting the epoxidised diene polymer with prim. or sec. amines to form tert. amino gps.; (iii) converting the tert. amino gps. to quat. ammonium gps. by reacting the prod. of (ii) with 1,2-epoxide cpds. contg. 1-2 epoxide gps/mol. in the presence of acids and opt. (iv) reacting a part of the OH gps. of the quat. ammonium gp.-contg. polymers with partly masked polyisocyanate. The binders are used for the cathodic electro-dip lacquering of metal parts, esp. car parts and household articles. The electro-dip lacquers have high bulk-stability and yield coatings having high elasticity, adhesion, resistance to chemicals and corrosion-protecting properties. The epoxide gp. contg. cpds. used for quaternising in (iii) effect easier alkoxylation than the epoxide gps. of the epoxidised diene polymer itself. No malodorous prods. are dissociated on stoving.

Abstract: An aqueous cationic surface-coating system contains an olefinically unsaturated surface-coating binder having basic nitrogen groups, some or all of which are converted into salts with acid, a Co, Mn, Pb, Ce, Zr, Ca, Zn, Fe, Al, Cu, Ni or Cd complex, if appropriate in combination with an inhibitor and/or an initiator which supplies free radicals. This surface-coating system can be used for cathodic electrocoating or for conventional methods of surface-coating.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of curable polyadducts, possessing basic nitrogen groups, wherein (A) monophenols and/or polyphenols, which contain groups of the general formula (I): where R1 and R2 are identical or different and each is hydrogen or methyl are reacted with (B) amines having one or more primary and/or secondary amino groups, and the adduct formed is reacted with (C) epoxide compounds having from 1 to 4 epoxide groups per molecule and having a molecular weight of at most 2,500, the ratio of the phenolic hydroxyl groups of (A) to epoxide groups of (C) being from 1:0.5 to 1:2 and the amine (B) being employed in such amount that the resulting polyadduct of (A), (B) and (C) contains from 0.1 to 5% by weight of basic nitrogen, and the use of the products, after protonation with an acid, as binders for the production of coatings, especially for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of self-crosslinking, cathodic electrocoating binders by reacting polyether-polyols, which may or may not contain thio groups, with semi-blocked diisocyanates or partially blocked polyisocyanates, wherein the reaction products (A), containing blocked isocyanate groups, are reacted with a polyamine (B), some of whose amino groups may or may not be in the form of ketimine groups, in such a way that one or more amino groups of the polyamine (B) form a urea group with a blocked isocyanate group of the reaction product (A), and the self-cross-linking reaction product of (A) and (B) is converted into a water-dilutable form in the conventional manner by protonization with an acid. The coating binders prepared according to the invention may be used for cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

Abstract: Surface-coating binders based on a copolymer which contains tertiary amino groups, blocked isocyanate groups, hydroxyl groups and ether groups and which, due to partial or complete salification with an acid, is water-soluble or water-dispersible. The copolymer contains, as copolymerized units, an olefinically unsaturated compound possessing a tertiary amino group, an N-(alk-1-enyl) isocyanate blocked with a CH-, OH- or NH-acidic blocking agent, and an adduct of an epoxy resin based on bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin, andhaving a molecular weight of from 380 to 3,500, with an olefinically unsaturated alcohol of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, and with an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, with or without one or more other copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated compounds, and has a mean molecular weight of from 1,000 to 20,000. The novel surface-coating binder is useful, either as a self-crosslinking binder or as a binder which needs an external crosslinking agent, for the cathodic electrocoating of metallic articles.

Abstract: Adducts obtained by reacting an epoxide compound with guanidine or a guanidine derivative, using not less than 1 mole of guanidine or guanidine derivative per epoxide equivalent of the epoxide compound; the adducts may or may not be partially or completely neutralized by adding acid, and may additionally contain blocked isocyanate groups. The novel adducts may be used, in combination with a completely blocked polyisocyanate, aminoplast resin and/or phenoplast resin, as binders in coating agents, and for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.
