Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective and economical method for producing pure triethylenediamine(TEDA) and its solution. SOLUTION: This method for producing pure triethylenediamine solution comprises evaporating triethylenediamine and introducing the gas state triethylenediamine into a liquid solvent. The gaseous triethylendiamine is obtained from the top of a column or its side discharging port. Further, the pure triethylenediamine solution is produced by following the above method and then crystallizing the triethylenediamine from the solution. The liquid solvent is selected from the group consisting of cyclic or non-cyclic hydrocarbons, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, aliphatic carboxylic acid esters, aliphatic nitriles and ethers.

Abstract: An extraction-rectification process produces a low-volatile sump fraction and ionic fluid, in a reaction in which the ionic fraction is used as an entrainer. The sump fraction is discharged to an evaporator stage operated at a pressure of less than 500 mbar, thereby separating most of the low-volatile fraction from the ionic fluid. The low-volatile content in the ionic fluid falls to less than 5% wt. Alternatively, the discharging sump fraction is surrendered to a stripper where it is exposed to an inert gas or super-heated steam at ambient pressure or less than 900 mbar. The ionic fluid is surrendered to a further stripper where it is exposed to an inert gas or super-heated steam at ambient pressure or less than 500 mbar. The inert gas is dry air. The ionic fluid yield is returned to the extraction-rectification column. An independent claim is included for a process to separate mixtures of polar and non-polar substances that form azeotropes, or have a narrow boiling point range.

Abstract: Distillation apparatus, consisting of a partitioned column or a system of thermally coupled distillation columns, includes inlet lines for a hydrocarbon mixture, hydrogen and alcohol, outlet lines for low, medium and high boilers and heterogeneous hydrogenation and etherification catalysts, all located in specific segments of the apparatus. In operation hydrogen is obtained as low boiler and ether as high boiler. Distillation apparatus consists of a partitioned column or a system of thermally coupled distillation columns, including the following segments: (a) highest region of the overall arrangement; (b) concentration region of the feed unit; (c) distillation region of the feed unit; (d) upper region of the withdrawal unit; (e) lower region of the withdrawal unit; and (f) lowest region of the overall arrangement. Also provided are: a hydrocarbon mixture inlet point between segments (b) and (c); a medium boilers outlet point between (d) and (e); a low boilers outlet point in (a); a low boilers outlet point in (f); at least one hydrogen inlet point below (a); at least one alcohol inlet point in (a), (b) and/or (c); inserts containing a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst in (a), (d), (e) and/or (f); and inserts containing a heterogeneous etherification catalyst in (a), (b), (c) and/or (f). In operation hydrogen is obtained as low boiler and ether as high boiler. An Independent claim is included for a process for reactive distillation of hydrocarbon mixtures using the apparatus.

Abstract: Anhydrous or substantially anhydrous formic acid is obtained by hydrolysis of methyl formate, in a process wherein (a) methyl formate is hydrolyzed, (b) the methanol and excess methyl formate are distilled from the hydrolysis mixture obtained, (c) the bottom product of distillation (b), consisting of formic acid and water, is extracted, in a liquid-liquid extraction, with an extractant which in the main takes up the formic acid, (d) the resulting extract phase, consisting of formic acid, the extractant and a part of the water, is subjected to distillation, (e) the top product obtained from this distillation and consisting of all or part of the water introduced into the distillation, and part of the formic acid, is recycled, as vapor, into the lower part of the distillation column of stage (b), (f) the bottom product of distillation stage (d), consisting of the extractant, with or without part of the water, and the greater part of the formic acid, is separated by distillation into anhydrous or substantially anhydrous formic acid and the extractant, and (g) the extractant leaving stage (f) is recycled to the process.
