Abstract: 1,170,123. p-Dialkylbenzenes. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 24 Feb., 1967 [25 Feb., 1966], No. 8902/67. Heading C5E. p-Dialkylbenzenes are prepared by reacting alkylbenzenes or benzene with olefins in the presence of aluminium chloride at a temperature above 60‹ C. for a period of less than 3 minutes. C 2 -C 12 olefins are specified. The examples describe the reaction of cumene with propylene to yield p-diisopropylbenzene in admixture with the ortho- and meta-isomers, triisopropylbenzenes and tetraisopropylbenzenes.

Abstract: In a continuous process for preparing amides by reaction of esters with primary or secondary amines, the reactants are introduced into a column in which there is, both above and below the point of introduction, a countercurrent flow of ascending vaporous products and descending liquid products (the amide being withdrawn from a point below the supply point), and a temperature gradient increasing from top to bottom. The esters are derived from C1- 4 acids and C1- 4 alcohols and the amines have 1-12 C atoms and may contain 1 or 2 OH groups or ether bridges; the column temperatures are not more than 260 DEG C. at the bottom and at least 20 DEG C. at the top. A part only of the top product is removed at a minimum reflux ratio of 2: 1. Exemplified products are HCONMe2, HCONHEt, HCONEt2, HCONBu2, HCONH (cyclohexyl) and AcNHEt.

Abstract: Adiponitrile is produced by entraining solid free-flowing adipic acid in a current of ammonia and introducing the mixture, at a temperature of below 50 DEG C., into a fluidized bed of a dehydration catalyst at 250-550 DEG C., the bed being fluidized by ammonia, and the total molar ratio of ammonia to adipic acid being at least 2: 1. Variations of the procedure are described. Suitable catalysts are silica gel, boron phosphate and catalysts containing phosphoric acid, and which may be activated by small amounts of alkali metal oxides.
