Abstract: A process for the preparation of beta -carotene micellar solutions, wherein a non-ionic emulsifier which is suitable for the preparation of micellar solutions is heated at from 160 DEG to 180 DEG C. and a total of from 20 to 30% by weight, based on the emulsifier, of beta -carotene is introduced in the presence of a conventional antioxidant, the hot homogeneous mixture is cooled rapidly to below 100 DEG C. by adding water, and the formulation is brought to the desired concentration of from 3 to 6% by weight by adding further water, and the beta -carotene micellar solutions obtained by this process. The non-ionic emulsifiers used in this process have an HLB value of from 12 to 16, and are in particular oxyethylated triglycerides of fatty acids of 12 to 18 carbon atoms containing 20-60 oxyethylene units. Parenteral admininstration of the stable beta -carotene micellar solutions according to the invention to cattle relieves the disturbed estrus cycle and impaired fertility caused by beta -carotene deficiency.

Abstract: 4-Monoacetals of (E)-2-methylbut-2-ene-1,4-dial of the general formula I (I) where R1 and R2 are each an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 5 to 7 carbon atoms or benzyl, or R1 and R2 together form an ethylene or propylene radical which may furthermore be substituted by lower alkyl, are prepared by a process in which a compound of the general formula II (II) where either R3 and R4 are both one of the groups where R1 and R2 have the above meanings, or R3 is one of the groups and R4 is formyl is reacted, at from 20 DEG to 200 DEG C., in the presence of an acidic compound, with the compound of the formula III R5-OH (III) where R5 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms or hydroxyalkyl of 2 to 5 carbon atoms, and, where R3 and R4 are each R5 is alkyl, and where R3 and R4 are each R5 is hydrogen, and where R3 is and R4 is R5 is hydrogen and/or alkyl.

Abstract: Prodn. of aq. solns. of polyenyltriarylphosphonium salts of formula R-P(Ar)3 +X- (I) (where R is a 5-20C aliphatic, cycloaliphatic-aliphatic or aromatic-aliphatic polyene radical; Ar is aryl; X- is the anion equiv. of a strong acid) is carried out by steam stripping a 10-70 wt.% soln. of (I) in an organic solvent, maintained at 30-120 degrees C, so that the solvent and any other volatile cpds. derived from the synthesis of (I) are removed and part of the steam condenses to form an aq. soln. Some cpds. (I), e.g. (I; R is beta-ionylidenethyl) are useful as pesticides (e.g. for control of water snails); others are useful as intermediates for carotenoid synthesis (cf. DT 2505869). The process avoids thermal decompsn. (cf. direct distn.) and foaming (cf. addn. of water followed by distn.).
