    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit the increase in viscosity of a two-component coating material and prolong the service life thereof by using a pigment preparation containing a phosphate and an inorganic pigment selected from among bismuth vanadate pigments and rutile-type pigments. SOLUTION: This pigment preparation contains 1 to 50 mass % phosphate and 50 to 99 mass % inorganic pigment selected from among bismuth vanadate pigments and rutile-type pigments. An orthophosphate which may contain hydroxide ion and/or halide ion is preferable as the phosphate, and a phosphate of boron, aluminum, zinc, and/or an alkaline earth metal is also suitable. A suspension of 10 to 60 mass % phosphate pigment in an aqueous medium is subjected to wet grinding with a ball mill or the like, then freed of a grinding medium, and dried under stirring with a rotary dryer or the like under a reduced pressure, thus giving a pigment preparation, which is compounded into a binder of a coating material. The preparation is useful for coloring a coating material, a printing ink, etc.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous coating composition which is excellent in stability and color characteristics and is useful for the glossy coatings of automobiles, by compounding a coating film-forming polymer, a metallic pigment, an organic nitro compound, and an organic solvent. SOLUTION: This aqueous coating composition comprises (A) an aqueous or water-dispersible coating film-forming polymer (preferably a polyurethane resin), (B) a metallic resin based on small coated metal plates, (C) an organic nitro compound additionally functionalized with a carboxyl group, a carbonyl group and/or a hydroxyl group, and (D) an organic solvent (preferably an alkylene glycol monoether) capable of dissolving the component C, and other conventional components. The component B preferably contains small metal plates coated with a metal oxide, more preferably small aluminum plates coated with an iron oxide, titanium dioxide and/or a chromium oxide.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject bismuth vanadate pigment that gives good coating layer properties, particularly stability, for example, good resistance to weather and is useful for paint by forming a coating layer containing a metal fluoride, for example, calcium fluoride or the like. SOLUTION: This pigment provide a coating layer that contains (A) at least one of metal fluoride comprising calcium fluoride, bismuth oxyfluoride, or fluorinated lanthanides or oxyfluorinated lanthanides or their mixture. In addition, this pigment contains (B) at least one of metal oxides selected from alkaline earth metals, aluminum, silicon, tin, titanium, zirconium, hafnium and the like, further, the coating layer preferably includes (C) at least one of metal phosphate (for example, orthophosphate salt). In a preferred embodiment, the objective pigment is prepared by allowing the above-stated coating layer or the like to chemically precipitate on the base pigment through the wet process.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a goniochromatic luster pigment having advantageous coating properties by selecting a pigment based on multiply coated iron oxide platelets each comprising a packet of two colorless coated layers having specified refracting indices. SOLUTION: This pigment is based on multiply coated iron oxide platelets each comprising at least one packet comprising a colorless coating (A) having a refractive index n =2.0 and is obtained by forming coatings A and B on iron oxide platelets by a wet chemical process comprising the independent hydrolysis of organic or inorganic metal compounds or by the gas phase decomposition of volatile organic or inorganic metal compounds. It is desirable that the iron oxide platelets are platelet-like α-iron (III) oxide or magnetite optionally doped with silicon, aluminum and/or manganese. Coating A is made from a lowly refractive colorless substance applicable to iron oxide platelets in the form of a durable coating and is desirably silicon oxide (hydrate). Coating B is made from a highly refractive colorless substance applicable to coating A in the form of a durable coating and is desirably titanium dioxide, titanium oxide hydrate, or the like.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject granular pigment composition that can suppress marked dust pollution on the handling, improve the fluidity when it is fed to a container and is useful for coloring polymer materials by formulating the inorganic pigments and the organic pigments in specific amounts. SOLUTION: This pigment composition comprises (A) 50-99.5 wt.% of at least one of inorganic pigments (suitably bismuth vanadate pigment and/or rutile pigment or the like) and (B) 0.5-50 wt.% of at least one of organic pigments (suitably quinophthalone pigment and/or isoindoline pigment). In addition, a mixture of a plurality of yellow pigments or a yellow pigment and an orange pigment, red pigment, brown pigment and/or blue pigments may be included in this composition. The objective pigment is preferably prepared by together wet-grinding the crude pigments occurring in the synthesis of pigments and the resultant pigment suspension on the grinding are dried, as their mixing is continued.
