Abstract: Mixing head for multi-component plastics, in particular polyurethane, in the cylindrical mixing chamber (3) of which a corresponding ram (6) is able to move back and forth for controlling the component flows. The outlet opening (14) of the mixing chamber (3) is made in the shell of the mixing chamber and opens out into a cylinder space (5) which is axially parallel to the mixing chamber and in which a pull-back ram (7) is guided in a sealing manner. The cylinder space (5) forms a stabilising zone for the mixture of plastics components, so that, given an adequately laminar flow, the said mixture can enter a mould.

Abstract: A mixing head for multicomponent plastics, especially polyurethane, in whose mixing chamber (2) a hollow piston (7) can be moved to and fro to control the component streams. The hollow piston contains an expulsion piston (8), which is movable independently of the hollow piston, and which can be passed through an outlet tube (3) which adjoins the outlet orifice (4). The end face (12) of the hollow piston forms, together with the mixing chamber wall (11) nearest the sprue, a shearing gap in which the components are mixed. As a result of the design and arrangement of the pistons (7) and (8), good mixing is achievable even under critical conditions, and the mixing chamber is also easily cleaned.

Abstract: Thick liquids are blended and homogenised by continuous passage through varying shear field. Here they are subjected to a shear frequency of 5 to 1000 Hz with a shear stress of >=103 N/m2. The portion of liquid subjected to shear at any moment should not exceed a total volume of 1-40%. The high shearing follows a zone of relaxation. The ratio of through put to shearing surface is 5.103 to 25.103 kg/m2h. The viscous liquid can contain up to 80% wt. of dispersed solids, and chemical reactions or crystallisation can occur during the process.
