    Abstract: The prodn. of a hydrogenation catalyst comprises the redn. of Pt in an oxidn. state of not less than 2 to Pt in an oxidn. state of zero. The process is carried out in aq. medium in the presence of carbon-contg. support, opt. after partial poisoning with S, As, Te or Sb cpds., using an ammonium or phosphonium salt of formula (XR4)nY (I) as the reducing agent, X = N or P, R = H, 1-18C alkyl, 5-10C cycloalkyl, Ph or Ph-substd. 1-4C alkyl (opt. with Ph gps. substd. with 1-3 halogen, nitro, amino or 1-6C alkyl gps.,) R may be the same or different, but not all H if X = P, n = 1-3, Y = organic anion. Also claimed is (i) a hydrogenation catalyst obtd. by this process, (ii) a process for the prodn. of hydroxylammonium salts by redn. of NO with hydrogen in the presence of this catalyst, (iii) a process for the regeneration of a Pt-based hydrogenation catalyst by the known method, using a cpd. (I) as reducing agent in the redn. of Pt to Pt .

    Abstract: Distillative work-up of telomer mixts. (I) from the transition metal complex-catalysed telomerisation of 1,3-butadiene with water is effected by passing the mixt. (I) through the distn. appts. against a countercurrent of water vapour. In more detail, an inert gas is also passed through the appts., and distn. is pref. carried out at below 200 mbar in a thin-film evaporator; the condensate is sepd. into organic and aq. phases, then the aq. phase is superheated and the superheated vapour is recycled through the appts. as a countercurrent to (I); the bottom prod. from distn. is returned to the telomerisation reactor. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides an economical process for working up mixts. (I), esp. to separate the octadienols obd. by telomerisation of butadiene with water in the presence of Pd/phosphine complex catalysts; passing steam through the distn. appts. as above results in a marked improvement in the efficiency of sep., together with a higher throughput under relatively mild conditions and minimal prodn. of high-boiling ethers, without reducing the activity of the catalyst.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a hydrogenation catalyst by the reduction from platinum in the stage of oxidation of +4 (Pt (IV)) with a selective reducing agent in an acidic aqueous medium in the presence of a carbon-containing carrier to platinum in the stage of oxidation +2 (Pt (II)), subsequent poisoning of the platinum thus obtained with a sulphur-containing selective reducing agent, and subsequent reduction of the platinum thus partially poisoned to form metallic platinum (Pt(0)) and subsequent processing as known per se in that (a) Pt (II) is partially poisoned with a sulphur-containing selective reducing agent, wherein the sulphur-containing selective reduction agent is used in an amount which corresponds to from 15 to 70 mol % of the amount of the sulphur-containing selective reducing agent which might be needed to reduce Pt(IV) to Pt (II), provided that the amount of Pt (IV) corresponds to the amount of Pt (II) used and to be poisoned, and subsequently the partially poisoned Pt (II) is reduced with an alkali metal formate to Pt (0); or (b) platinum in the stage of oxidation of greater than +2 is partially poisoned and subsequently or simultaneously reduced with an alkali metal formate to Pt (0). The invention also relates to a hydrogenation catalyst, use of the hydrogenation catalyst for preparing hydroxylammonium salts, a process for the preparation of hydroxylammonium salts, and a process for regenerating platinum-containing hydrogenation catalysts.
