    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain azo(oxy)benzene useful as an intermediate for chemical industry, etc., in high efficiency by the reduction coupling of nitrobenzene in vapor phase at a high temperature using heterogeneous catalytic action of a specific redox catalyst having reduced or partially reduced form. SOLUTION: Azobenzene and azoxybenzene are produced by the reduction coupling of nitrobenzene in vapor phase at a high temperature using heterogeneous catalytic action of a specific redox catalyst having reduced or partially reduced form. The reducing catalyst contains one or more active metals such as Bi, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Pb, Mo, Ce, U, Sn, Sb, Cu, La, W, Nb, Pd, Pt, Ni and In. Nitrobenzene is passed on the redox catalyst together with one or more kinds of gaseous reducing agents free from hydrogen for the deoxidization of nitrobenzene. The average oxidized state of the active metal of the redox catalyst is lower than the maximum oxidized state stable under each reaction condition by >=0.5 before introducing nitrobenzene together with the reducing agent.

    Abstract: A process for the reductive coupling of nitrobenzene (NB) to give azobenzene (AB) and azoxybenzene (AOB), comprises passing NB with gaseous, hydrogen-free reducing agent(s) (RA) at elevated temperature in the gas phase over a heterogeneous redox catalyst in its reduced or partly reduced form. The catalyst contains active metal(s) of Bi, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Pb, Mo, Ce, U, Sn, Sb, Cu, La, W, Nb, Pd, Pt, Ni and/or In, and the average oxidation state of the active metal before contact with NB and RA is at least 0.5 below the maximum oxidation state which is stable under the reaction conditions. Also claimed is (i) a similar process in which the NB is deoxygenated by passing over a redox catalyst as above in the absence of any free gaseous RA and in amounts such that the catalyst is not completely spent; and (ii) redox catalysts as above.

    Abstract: Unsaturated cyclic ethers are produced from diols in high yield and with low hydrogenated byproduct formation, by use of a supported cobalt-noble metal catalyst that has been doped with sulfur. A process for the production of unsaturated cyclic ethers (I) of formula (1) comprises reaction of a diol (II) of formula: OH-CH(R )-Y-CH(R )-CH(R )-OH (2), in the liquid phase at 150-300 degrees C, in the presence of a supported cobalt- containing catalyst (III) that has not been activated by reduction prior to use. The cobalt containing catalyst (III) is impregnated with a noble metal consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, osmium and/or rhenium on an inert carrier that is doped with sulfur. Y = -(CHR )q- or -(CHR )q-O-; R - R = H or 1-4C alkyl; q = 0-3. An Independent claim is also included for the supported cobalt catalyst (III).
