Abstract: Tert.-dodecylmercaptan (I), obtained by the acid-catalysed addition of hydrogen sulfide to a mixture containing olefins derived from n-dodecane, 5-methyl-n-undecane, 4-ethyl-n-decane, 5,6-dimethyl-n-decane, 5-ethyl-6-methyl-n-nonane, 4,5-diethyl-n-octane and other hydrocarbons, in amounts of 10-18, 25-40, 25-40, 2-8, 5-12, 1-5 and up to 5 wt% respectively. Independent claims are also included for (1) a method (M1) as described above for the production of (I) (2) a method (M2) for the regulation of mol. wt. in the polymerisation of vinyl monomers by adding (I) as mol. wt. regulator.
