Abstract: Catalyst contg. Cu and Al (cpds.) used in the prodn. of N-methylpyrrolidine (I) by the hydrogenation of N-methylpyrrolidone (II) is produced by pptn. of a basic carbonate of the compsn. CumAl6(CO3)O.5mO3(OH)m+12 (in which m has any value between 2 and 6) from an aq. soln. of Cu and Al salts with aq. alkali (bi)carbonate soln. at pH 7-9.5 and 60-90 degrees C, followed by drying, opt. shaping, heating and redn. with H2. Yields of 98% are possible and 95% attainable in prolonged operation on the technical scale. (I) of high purity can be produced, even if only partial hydrogenation is carried out, since (I) and (II) can be sepd. easily by distn. and (I) can also be dried easily.

Abstract: Hydrogenation catalysts, which have a specific surface area of from 50 to 150 square meters per gram, solely or partially contain crystals having a spinel structure and copper in the form of copper oxide, and have been obtained by precipitating copper and aluminum in a ratio of from 0.25 to 3 atoms of copper per atom of aluminum from their compounds in the presence of a carbonate at a pH of from 4.5 to 9 and calcining the resulting precipitate at from 300 DEG to 800 DEG C., for the catalytic preparation of propanediols by hydrogenating hydroxypropionaldehydes at not more than 300 bar pressure and from 50 DEG to 200 DEG C., and processes for the preparation of propanediols by the use of such catalysts. The propanediols obtainable by the process of the invention, in particular 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diol, are valuable starting materials for the preparation of lubricants, plastics, surface coatings and synthetic resins, for example corresponding polyesters.

Abstract: Alcohols are prepd. by hydrogenating water-soluble olefin oxides in aq. soln. at an Ni catalyst, under increased H2 pressure and temp. In a pref. process, 1,2,4-butane-triol is prepd. by hydrogenating 1,4-butanediol oxide. Hydrogenation of water-soluble olefin oxides in aq. soln. proceeds as well as in an anhydrous solvent. Epoxide concn. is esp. 10-50 wt.%. Hydrogenation conditions are 200-300 bar, at 20-200 (50-150) esp. 100 degrees C. The epoxides may contain 2-30C and opt. solubilising gps. Catalyst may be Raney Ni, reduced Ni silicates and supported Ni. Catalyst concn. in suspension is opt. 2-20 (5-15) wt. %.

Abstract: In the prodn. of phthalide, phthalic anhydride is subjected to catalytic hydrogenation in the gas phase at 150-280 degrees C and 20 bar using Cu-contg. catalysts. Phthalide is useful as an intermediate, e.g. for dyes and pharmaceuticals. Gas-phase hydrogenation avoids the need for sepg. the product from solvent. Conversion is >90% and yields are >85%. Pref. catalysts are Cu- and Al-contg. catalysts, e.g. those described in DT 2445303. Hydrogenation temp. is pref. 180-250 degrees C, and pressure is pref. 10 bar. The residence time of the reaction mixt. in the catalyst zone is pref. 1-100 seconds.
