Abstract: Ruthenium complexes are prepared by addition of alkyne compounds to ruthenium compounds in the presence of hydrogen, a reducing agent and optionally water. A process for the preparation of ruthenium complexes (I) of formula (1) comprises: (a) reaction of RuX3 with L and L in an inert solvent in the presence of a reducing agent and hydrogen and without isolation of intermediates followed by (b) addition of compounds of formula (2), optionally in the presence of water. RuX2(=CH-CH2R)L L (1) R - C ?= CH (2) where X = an anionic ligand R = H, 1-20C alkyl or 6-20C aryl, optionally substituted L , L = neutral electron donor ligands.

Abstract: Ruthenium-alkylidene complexes are obtained by reacting ruthenium (III) compounds with neutral donor ligands in presence of hydrogen and a reducing agent, and then reacting the unisolated intermediate with an acetylene compound in presence of hydrogen. A process for the production of ruthenium complexes of formula RuX2(=CH-CH2R)L L (I), in which X = a monodentate anionic ligand; R = hydrogen or optionally substituted 1-20C alkyl or 6-20C aryl; L , L = neutral electron-donor ligands , comprises (a) reacting RuX3 with L and L in an inert solvent in presence of hydrogen and a reducing agent and then, without isolating intermediates, (b) reacting with compounds of formula R-C?=CH (II) in the presence of hydrogen.
