Abstract: Finishes for material or synthetic leather consist of (a) an aq. dispersion of a copolymer having, acetylacetate gps, which may be mixed with the usual pigments, (b) formaldehyde and/or polyaldehyde, and (c) a polyamine, mixed together or applied successively. The copolymer contains 0.5-50% pref. 20-40% of a polymerizable unsatd. olefin monomer having acetylacetate grps. such as acetylacetates of glycol semi-acrylates or methacrylates (b) is used for cross-linking, as 5-100% by wt. of the copolymer (c) is added to increase the rate of cross-linking. The cross-linking is pref. carried out at 60-80 degrees C. The finishes protect the surface of the leather and fixes the pigments used; they give stability against dry or wet rubbing, and resistance to swelling and solvents.

Abstract: Leather and its substitutes are dressed by impregnation with (a) an aq. dispersion of an acetylacetate gp. contg. polymer contg. usual pigments and (b) a polyamine, and by finishing with HCHO and/or polyaldehyde. The prodts. have good swelling and abrasion resistance and are fast to solvents.
