    Abstract: 40The efficiency of high molecular weight crosslinked polycarboxylic acids which are used as thickeners for neutral and alkaline aqueous systems and are obtained by precipitation polymerization or suspension polymerization of a mixture of (a) from 70 to 99.9% by weight of monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, (b) from 0.1 to 10% by weight of ethylenically diunsaturated or polyunsaturated monomers and (c) from 0 to 20% by weight of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers at as high as 75 DEG C. is increased by a process in which the copolymer is heated for from 2 minutes to 5 hours at from 80 DEG to 130 DEG C. after the polymerization.

A coating composition contains a copolymer (I) of (A) 50 to 95% by weight of an ester of a monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid having three to five carbon atoms and an alcohol having one to eight carbon atoms; (B) 0À75 to 25% by weight of at least one N- methylol amide of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid have three to five carbon atoms which has been etherified with an alcohol having one to eight carbon atoms; and (C) 0 to 40% by weight of at least one other copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated monomer, dispersed in an organic liquid, said dispersion having been prepared by polymerizing the monomers in the organic liquid, in the presence of both a freeradical initiator and a polymer (11) and/or polycondensate (11) having a molecular weight of more than 1200 which is compatible with the copolymer (1), which is soluble in the organic liquid and has a dispersing action. In the examples (1) ethyl acrylate, acrylic acid, N-nbutoxymethyl methacrylamide and 1,4-butanediol monoacrylate are copolymerized in an organic solvent in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and in the presence of a dispersing agent which'is a copolymer of styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and N-vinyl imidazole, (2) the monomers of (1) and additionally methyl methacrylate are copolymerized in an organic solvent in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and in the presence of a dispersing agent which is a copolymer of styrene, 2-ethyl hexylacrylate, N- vinyl imidazole, N-vinyl caprolactam and methyl methacrylate, (3) t-butyl acrylate, 2- ethyl hexyl acrylate, di-n-butyl maleate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl propionate, N,N-diethylacrylamide, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, N-nbutoxymethylacrylamide, N - methoxymethyl methacrylamide and 2-ethyl acrylate are copolymerized in an organic solvent in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, di-tert-butyl per-' oxide and azoisobutyronitrile in the presence of a dispersing agent which is a copolymer of styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate and N-vinyl pyrrolidone, (4) methylmethacrylate, ethyl acrylate, acrylic acid and N-butoxymethylmethacrylamide are copolymerized in an organic solvent in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and a dispersing agent which is a condensate of phthalic acid and glycerol modified with linseed oil, and (5) ethyl acrylate, butanediol acrylate acetylacetate, N-butoxymethylmethacrylamide, butanediol monoacrylate, styrene and acrylic acid are copolymerized as in (4) above.

[Also in Division D1] A composition suitable for treating cellulosic fabrics comprises a compound which improves the crease resistance of the fabric and a copolymer of 1-10% by weight of a N-methylolamide of an acrylic acid and 0À5-10% by weight of at least one compound containing in the molecule at least two polymerizable double bonds, the balance of 100% by weight being made up of at least one further polymerizable compound. The N-methylolamide of an acrylic acid may be N-methylolacrylamide or N- methylolmethacrylamide or an ether derivative thereof and suitable compounds containing at least two double bonds are divinyl benzene and its derivatives and substitution products, ethylene glycol diacrylate, butane diol diacrylate or dimethacrylate, hexane diol diacrylate, glycerol triacrylate, vinyl methacrylate, 1,3,5 - triacyl - hexahydrotriazine - (1,3,5) allyl acrylate and methylene bisacrylamide. The further polymerizable compounds making up the copolymer may be methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylonitrile, isopropyl acrylate, N-dibutylacrylamide, ethylhexyl acrylate or vinylpyrrolidone. The crease proofing agent may be a methylol compound of urea, ethylene or propylene urea, diphenyl urea, methyl urea, thiourea, dicyandiamide, guanidine, melamine, methylmelamine, phenyl melamine, glyoxal monoureine or diureine, a urethane, polyurethane, lactam, polyamide, triazinone, carboxylic amide or diamide or ether thereof, a methylol compound of a ketone, an acetal, an epoxy compound or a water soluble polymer or copolymer of an amide of an unsaturated carboxylic acid. The composition may be in the form of an aqueous solution or dispersion containing 30-150 g./l. of the crease-resisting agent and 5-100 g./l. of the copolymer and if desired an organic liquid, e.g. ethyl alcohol or glycerol, softeners, water repellants, colouring pigments and an acid condensation catalyst, e.g. magnesium chloride, zinc nitrate, monoammonium phosphate, ammonium nitrate and ammonium acetate.
