Abstract: A process for the manufacture of cross-linked foamable moldings from olefin polymers, wherein the olefin polymer is mixed with (A) A SOLID ORGANIC BLOWING AGENT WHICH ELIMINATES GASES WHEN HEATED, (B) AN ORGANIC PEROXIDE, (C) CONVENTIONAL ADDITIVES AND (D) AN ACTIVATING ORGANIC COMPOUND WHICH LOWERS THE DECOMPOSITION TEMPERATURE OF THE PEROXIDE, AND THE MIXTURE IS MOLDED THERMOPLASTICALLY AND IS CROSSLINKED BELOW THE DECOMPOSITION TEMPERATURE OF THE BLOWING AGENT BUT ABOVE THE DECOMPOSITION TEMPERATURE OF THE ACTIVATED PEROXIDE.

Abstract: A liq. mixt. of alkali silicate and water contg. 45-95 wt.% water is dried to contain 6-40% water. The mass obtd. is opt. mixed with reinforcing materials and other additive prod. and is heated to 40-110 degrees C to bring it into a plastic state. The plastic mass is shaped by pressing, either during mixing or subsequently. The moulded pieces obtd. are cooled and may be provided with esp. an alkali resistant coating. Used for mfr. of panels for preventing the progress of fire. The water is the mixt. does not have to be removed entirely from the moulded articles, but partly from the clay before moulding, so that this part of the process can be effected more rapidly and cheaply with expenditure of less energy than in prior art. Unevenness of drying causing warpage etc. are eliminated.

Abstract: Prodn. of moulded bodies comprises mixing finely divided foam-forming polyolefin particles with 0.3 to 4 g., pref. 0.6-2 g., (per 1. of polyolefin) of a solvent-free hardenable blinder, pressing together the mixt. to 5-70% (pref. 40-70%) of its bulk volume, and hardening under pressure, and introducing needles of dia. is not >5 mm, into the mixt. before, during or after the step of pressing the mixt. and removing the needles again before the hardening step. The polymers are derived from 2-4C olefins, and have an X-ray crystallinity at 25 degrees C >25 wt%., e.g. homopolymers or copolymers of ethylene and propylene; esp. copolymers of ethylene with esters of (meth)acrylic acid or vinylcarboxylic acid esters contg. >=50 wt% of ethylene units. The introduction and removal of the needles forms channels through which air can escape from the mixt. and the resulting moulded bodies are free from cavities. The prods. can be used for forming shock-absorbing packing matl., sound-absorbing plates, and insulation in the building industry.

Abstract: Foam moldings of olefin polymers are prepared by heating, and pressing together, foamed particles of an olefin polymer, containing crosslinked constituents, in molds, a temperature gradient of from 0.5 DEG to 25 DEG C per cm of loose mass of particles being established in the mold, which has a gas-permeable wall on the lower-temperature side.
