Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for performing a polymerization process in a stirred reactor, wherein a critical time window is determined by means of a monitor of at least one polymerization process parameter and an associated process window, and when a critical time window is present, an adaptation of process conditions is made in order to configure the polymerization process to conform to the process window.

Abstract: Aqueous polymer dispersions based on copolymers of vinyl aromatics and conjugated aliphatic dienes having a mean particle size of from 80 to 150 nm, obtained by free radical emulsion copolymerization of (a) from 19.9 to 80 parts by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic compound, (b) from 19.9 to 80 parts by weight of at least one conjugated aliphatic diene, (c) from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated acid, and (d) from 0 to 20 parts by weight of at least one other monoethylenically Unsaturated monomer, the sum of the parts by weight of the monomers (a), (b), (c) and (d) always being 100, in an aqueous medium in the presence of at least one degraded starch having an intrinsic viscosity &eegr;i of less than 0.07 dl/g with the use of at least 0.9% by weight, based on the monomers used altogether, of initiators selected from peroxodisulfates, peroxosulfates, azo initiators, organic peroxides, organic hydroperoxides and hydrogen peroxide, at least 30% by weight of the initiators being initially taken together with the degraded starch in the aqueous medium and the monomers and the remaining initiators being metered into this initially taken mixture under polymerization conditions.

Processes for preparing this dispersion by emulsion polymerization of the monomers (a), (b), (c) and optionally (d) in the presence of a degraded starch with an intrinsic viscosity ? of less than 0.07 dl/g, where a portion of the initiator is initially charged together with the aqueous solution of the degraded starch in the reactor, and the remaining initiator and the monomers are metered in under polymerization conditions, and the use of the aqueous polymer dispersions as binders, adhesives, sizes for fibres or for producing coatings.

Abstract: Dispersiones acuosas de polímeros sobre la base de copolimerizados de compuestos vinilaromáticos y dienos alifáticos conjugados, caracterizadas porque presentan un tamaño medio de partículas de 80 a 150 nm y se pueden obtener a través de la copolimerización por emulsión de iniciación radical de (a) 19,9 a 80 partes en peso de, al menos, un compuesto vinilaromático, (b) 19,9 a 80 partes en peso de, al menos, un dieno alifático conjugado, (c) 0,1 a 10 partes en peso de, al menos, un ácido insaturado etilénicamente y (d) 0 a 20 partes en peso de, al menos, un monómero monoetilénicamente insaturado adicional, en donde la suma de las partes en peso de los monómeros (a), (b), (c) y (d) alcanza siempre el 100 % en peso, en un medio acuoso, en presencia de, al menos, un almidón desintegrado con una viscosidad intrínseca ηi de menos de 0,07 dl/g, utilizando, al menos 0,9 % en peso, en relación a la cantidad total de monómeros utilizada, de iniciadores seleccionados entre peroxodisulfatos, peroxosulfatos, azoiniciadores, peróxidos orgánicos, hidroperóxidos orgánicos y peróxido de hidrógeno, en donde al menos 30 % en peso de los iniciadores se disponen junto con el almidón desintegrado en el medio acuoso, y los monómeros, así como los iniciadores restantes son dosificados a este preparado en condiciones de polimerización.
