Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for enhancement of the wet strength of water-absorbent cross-linked foams produced according to existing processes. SOLUTION: The process for the reduction of the residual monomer content and enhancement of the wet strength of articles formed from water-absorbent cross-linked polymer foams containing units derived from monoethylenically unsaturated acids comprises a step of treating the formed articles with at least 0.5 mass% of a polymer which contains primary and/or secondary amino groups and has the molecular weight of at least 300. Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for treating aqueous suspensions of fine particulate fillers. According to said method, the treatment is carried out by heating an aqueous suspension of at least one fine particulate filler and then adding an aqueous dispersion of at least one latex.
Abstract:
Disclosed are paper coating slips containing a) one or more binders, b) an optional thickener, c) an optional fluorescent or phosphorescent ink, particularly as an optical brightening agent, d) pigments or fillers, and e) additional auxiliary agents, e.g. auxiliary flowing agents or other inks. Said paper coating slips are characterized in that at least 40 percent by weight of the total amount of binders a) are provided in the form of a synthetic, water-soluble, anionic polymer while less than 50 percent by weight of the total amount of binders a) are provided in the form of emulsion polymers.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for producing paper, paperboard, and cardboard having high dry strength, by adding (a) at least one trivalent cation in form of a salt; (b) at least one water-soluble cationic polymer; and (c) at least one water-soluble amphoteric polymer to the paper pulp, dehydrating the paper pulp while forming sheets, and subsequent drying of the paper product, wherein the water-soluble cationic polymer (b) is selected from the group of polymers containing vinylamine units (i), and from polymers containing ethylenimine units.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the use of water-soluble, amphoteric copolymers which can be obtained by the copolymerization of a) at least one N-vinyl carboxylic acid amide of general formula (I), wherein R1 and R2 independently represent H or C1 to C6 alkyl, b) at least one monomer which is selected from the group consisting of (b1) monoethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acids, phosphonic acids, phosphoric esters and derivatives thereof, and (b2) monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids and dicarboxylic acids, the salts thereof and dicarboxylic anhydrides, c) optionally at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which is different from components (a) and (b), and d) optionally at least one compound which has at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in the molecule, with the proviso that the monomer mixture contains at least one monomer (b) with at least one free acid group and/or an acid group in the ionic form, and subsequent partial or complete hydrolysis of the groups -CO-R1 from the monomers (a) that are polymerized into the copolymer. The copolymers according to the invention are used as agents for increasing the initial wet strength of paper.

Abstract:
Monomer solutions with a water content of at least 55 wt% are used in a method for the spray polymerisation of monomer solutions containing radically-polymerisable monomers in an inert atmosphere. An independent claim is also included for water-swellable polymers obtained by this method.
